  As a retired painter I have another trick I have used for decades to increase the lasting time of Linseed Oil. I put a quart of old petroleum based flat or low lustre urethane into a mix of two gallons of linseed oil and two gallons of paint thinner. <br><br>On outsides where sun bleaching is common, the resin of the small amount of urethane will slow this greatly, causing a longer lasting finish. This needs to be coated at least twice over a couple of years then it will last a lot longer between coats. <br><br>The hardened resin causes the oils to stay put. <br><br>Do not add more Urethane as too much will cause pealing. &nbsp;It also needs to be flat or close as semi gloss will leave shiny spots near all the knots, while it is flat every where else. <br><br>God Bless.

  I&apos;m a woman who loved doing things myself until an accident- probably fell in love with the idea bc of my grandfather whose garage always had jars of oil mixtures &amp; turpentine! I loved the smells, and that&apos;s where I first heard of the term gum spirits, but haven&apos;t heard it in decades!! I may start doing some of these doable projects again! <br><br>I am proud of your altruistic sense and decision to share your knowledge! Most people would make people pay for a link to an answer they would&apos;ve known if they&apos;d had known grandparents born around 1900! 😂😂

  My uncle delivered mail on the Lake in Indiana. Wooden ChrisCraft. I helped him sand it each spring and coat with this recipe. I can smell it rt now, I even feel young again. I&apos;m gonna go look in mirror . . &nbsp;. thank God I&apos;m still old and ugly . . &nbsp;Couldn&apos;t take anymore women in my life. I&apos;m safe

  When I was in the Navy 87-91 we still used linseed oil. You are so right about the fire hazard warning.

  I first used this mixture when a friend showed me a rifle stock he treated. I was blown away. The results are fantastic.

  At Lowes &nbsp;a quart of linseed oil cost 16.98 a quart, generic white vinegar 4.00 a gallon, turpentine 9.64 a quart. Total 30.62+tax. His cost $11.

  I found this recipe in a 1851 book called Household Recipes and used it to finish off the woodwork in my 1892 Victorian. It turned out beautifully with all the flutework and carved detailing perfectly preserved. I used three coats with a 000 steel wool between coats 1-2 and 2-3. Twenty years later it still has a deep glow and satin smooth finish. It does stink when applied but doesnt last long.
