I was in Afghanistan late 2013, we had a “translator” who was about 45 and already had a Visa and had his whole family living in Canada. I grew close to him on my patrols because he would not only teach me about the culture and the land but about life. I was a young brash Marine who just wanted to fight. He figured me out pretty quick and would show me that the loudest in the room was just scared. He would sleep outside with no protection and tell me if it was his time, it was his time. I thought he was I insane for him to be sleeping with no gear and under the stars with no worries. Over time I would join him, I even told him if I was ever hit to take my weapon (he wasn’t allowed to carry). He changed my perspective on life and the meaning of life. I was borderline racist towards Afghans and had no direction in life other than hate. Abraham…I miss you brother, thank you for being my role model.

Best part is when he changes the words translate to interpret and assumption to deduction. It perfectly countered his argument and placed a seed of doubt.

One of the first times I've seen a movie depicting US allies as actual competent allies and not idiots or side characters to get killed off to make the US look comparatively better

Fantastic movie. I very much appreciated how they portrayed Ahmed to be so adept. It's a welcome change from the usual depictions of Afghans as savages or simpletons and displays how beneficial they were during the war.

That person playing Ahmed.... simply brilliant in acting.
It's like a season professional just happening to be working under a team of newbies. But we all know who the boss is.
Never asserts his authority, a perfect teammate.

Leaving these type of guys behind in Afghanistan is one of the most disgusting things the US state dept. has done. Similar to a lot of south vietnamese

When Jake looks at him after it’s confirmed to be a trap is the most satisfying thing I’ve ever seen as if yo say “ok my bad I trust you

Jake Gyllenhaal deserves the level of fanfare that Leo usually gets.

While the movie is fiction - the circumstances are NOT. Many Afghans helped the allied military - not just the Americans - with guidance and translation over the years. They are now being hunted by the Taliban, since they took over in August 2021. Remember those chaotic scenes at Kabul airport and the USAF C.17 that took off with over 600 locals eager to escape ?

Despite the promises, many were left behind - now to be subject to lazy visa processing and bureaucratic demands for paperwork. By the Australian Home Affairs Department especially - who do not operate on the principle NO ONE LEFT BEHIND.
