I was on a coal face down a pit in Derbyshire for many years, we use to get visits from Doctors and Nurses who worked at the local hospital. Nearly all said they wouldn't do my job for a gold pig and nine young uns. Strange that, i used to tell them the same thing. They were the people who put us back together again after mine accidents.

If my old man was alive to watch this, he’d be pointing out things left right and center. R.I.P  Dad , we all miss you ❤❤❤

My dad worked here from 1955  to 1977, then helped to build the museum, which eventually closed. RIP Donald Samuel Bath.

When I was younger, late 90s, one of the few pit ponies that went back, was at my riding school not far from here. They said he was one of the last ones from Chatterley Whitfield, he was called Sooty and lived to a good age! He had a lovely retirement.

My great-grandfather worked down the mines in peacetime and fought at the Somme in WW1. He told his son, my grandfather, that of those two things, the mining was worse, and insisted he in turn join the army at the outbreak of WW2 because he genuinely thought it was a safer place to be. My grandfather was sent to Timor in the Pacific War, where he was captured by the Japanese...who promptly sent him to work down a mine.

I found this video very interesting. My grandad was a miner from age 14 at Boldon Colliery. Very good of the ex miners to spend so much time working in the museum.

I am from a coal mining family, all I ever wanted to do was to be a miner, but then there was the miners' strike of 84/85 that was the beginning of the end of coal mining. The decision makers wanted to put many people out of work.

My grandfather was a Barnsley miner (UK) in the 1900s, he never worked a coal seam thicker than 18-inch.
