I think the game serves as a great teachable moment in the early head coaching career of Tosh, our new coordinators and first time position coaches. No one is going to give us anything simply because we announce that we are serious about playing big time football. We have to earn every win piece by piece and build this foundation brick by brick.Tosh will be hungry.JKS will be hungry. On the flip side,I purchased a lifetime membership to the Cal Alumni Association, bought season tickets and purchased a ton of Nike Cal gear.I will never stop riding this Cal train.Go Bears Forever!!!!!!!!!

That 4th down miscue (in which John and I were both thinking that they should have punted) swung the momentum over to Ucla even though they didn't score on that drive, it changed the field position they took advantage of. Hopefully, Coach Lupoi learns from that. Btw, side note, I have the exact same shirt, but in gray. Great minds think alike! 😅

Ucla fan here: UCLA’s coaching experience showed. Chesney appeared calm & focused while the Cal coach often looked frantic. The interception just before half when UCLA was threatening to go up 28-10 was a huge momentum shift but the last ten minutes of the game seemed to be restoring the game to where it had been headed all slong. That is, UCLA dominated both sides of the ball and Cal imploded. There were two interceptions but there were also two other near misses. That last TD run by UCLA looked like Cal wasn’t fully engaged at the snap.

Lots to learn from. It was great to see that packed CMS, but UCLA came ready to ball out, while Cal looked tenuous much of the time. I think we'll be fine in the longer run, but we don't have much time to sort out the errors and get our rhythm. Go Bears!

Well stated on not reading into it and being resilient. That said I can't help but read into it, and there are a few points of concern for me that are glaring and need to be fixed asap... 1.) Why were we not in 12 personnel at least once? Somerville had to know that Hirtschler was going to bring pressure from all over the place. Our Oline was known to be a weakness, and our tight end room was known to be a strength. I get that Thomas was injured but clearly we weren't obtuse to playing Purcell as I saw 22 out there on numerous occasions... which brings me to 2.) That offensive playcalling was as predictable as it gets. And I'll just leave that one at that. Somerville has to do better than that. You have the best qb in the country. Don't send JKS under center for run-run then empty backfield on 3rd over and over again. Finally, and most concerning to me 3.) the fUCLA kids were jumping and dancing during the music breaks (when the game was knotted up) and our guys were just standing there not looking inspired at all. This is fine if Tosh was an established playcaller but he isn't. His bread and butter was sold as recruiting and being a motivator. Hopefully those areas improve in short order. Other things I noticed, dbs were not wrapping up at all. Fletcher has to do better. And stadium experience wise... How many years do we have to complain about the PA system? Also, rally comms once again need to be more situationally aware when calling for SS noise.

The good news is much of went wrong is fixable. The fact much of it was fixable at halftime and it wasn't is bad news. As others have pointed out the personnel groupings were.....odd. I didn't realize it at the game, it was more obvious re-watching the game yesterday, but Jimothy Lewis and Fred Williams played pretty well at tackle. But UCLA overloaded one side and our tackles were responsible for 2 defenders. It happened the WHOLE GAME. That's unacceptable.....but fixable. The play were Jaron got hit and fumbled (looked like targeting, IMO) was the most glaring example. As someone else has pointed out, out TE room is a strength. One of the best in the country. USE IT!!!!

Right out the gate I was alarmed of how quickly UCLA’s D line was putting pressure on JKS

Re: the missed tackles, is that an about lack of technique? I never played on D but it seems like habits are habits, and that doesn’t get fixed in a week of practice.

Still, so much to be proud of, build on and believe in.

All that said, #GoBears

Correct me if I am wrong; Chesney was at UCLA during Playoffs recruiting HS athletes with his full staff from JMU and 14 of his top players from their college playoff team, Tosh was game planning Oregon D for their upcoming games and made that point before he was hired as part of the equation. Tosh could NOT recruit HS kids as the time period for 2026 HS recruits was ending...AND he had no staff in play yet! I understand he went to the Transfer Portal however these players have NEVER played together in a game until this week! Chesney had a nucleolus of his best players (14) including their RB Knight who have played together in at least 14 games as many as 20+ games; The HYPE came from media NOT TOSH; He has said from the beginning we have a process and outcomes will reflect the process, a 24-24 score with 8 Minutes to go was impressive; CAL rushed for over 150 yards of offense, (Did we ever do that last year), I'm not sure we rushed for 150 yards in as many as 3 games last year? Please! Please! Please! Let's reflect the same positive attitude about this team their head coach emanates every where he seems to go! Did we have a sellout! Yes! Would we have had a sellout anyway without Coach Tosh
s enthusiasm! I seriously doubt it...What I am trying to say is the only losers cannot see the future of this program!

I say we had so many 'wins' Saturday night!

Nick Saban, Urban Myers, Dan Lanning, Dan Quinn, Lane Kiffin, Kirby Smart, Steve Sarkisyan, just to name a few of the coaches Tosh coached with, would NEVER have been able to do more this first game! In fact none of them would take this job! We are so blessed to have this individual who will build a great program!

Lastly while Chesney was recruiting HS at UCLA with his former staff of coaches, Tosh was only assembling his staff...Thanks God we have RON Rivera who 'get-it!' Who knows what it takes to build a program, not just a good team. but a program!

I think we are in very good hands...Let's let the corn grow a little taller before we decide to tear it up by the roots to see what we think we know, and what we think we see is really a result of what we do not see...

GO BEARS!

Same starting interior offensive lineman as last season leads to same offensive line performance

Disappointing game. Our OC Somerville called unspectacular on plays. Predictably attempting to run on first down up the middle which then puts JKS in an obvious must pass second down and long. No variety in our run game with sweeps, misdirection, etc. Our plays on offense took too long to develop whereas you could see UCLA was much more creative in explosive on their offensive plays. Also our offense seem to generally lack downfield route completions for receivers except for that spontaneous 38 second drive at the end of the 2nd quarter. What I’m hearing is Somerville the offensive coordinator brought an NFL style offense to Cal. seems like it’s maybe too complicated or just not appropriate for college football. Somerville said his offense would have a "toolbox" of optoins for our QB to use for variouys situations (mentioned back in his Spring Press Conferenece) Perhaps maybe some hope is from my view with high powered binoculars at the game is I saw Nck Rolovich with a headset very engaged with the offense and JKS. Really would have preferred Rolovich to be our OC as well as QB coach. He's well proven in the college ranks and got a raw deal on his vaccine firing from WSU. Rolovich is the best hire of the Wilcox era IMO. Reze, Ahmed, and Mr. Ortega any of your thoughts on this?

Is there any snap count info out there? I’m curious whose getting playing time looked like a lot of transfers out there
