Aight, self proclaimed LN expert here with some lore details to clear stuff up

The world Little Nightmares takes place in is called the Nowhere. We discover this from a podcast named "the sounds of nightmares", which takes place in reality. Children can end up in the Nowhere through their dreams or, well, nightmares. A man named Otto would help children deal with these nightmares while also using their experiences to better understand the Nowhere. Otto wants to find a way to go there because his older sister went missing many years ago with no trace but before she did, she described her nightmares eerily similar to how certain children describe theirs, so Otto becomes a psychologist to pursue these goals.

The characters we follow are Low (bow guy) and Alone (wrench girl). Low was a client/test subject of Otto's in the real world (which we see through those flashbacks of Low in the cell with a man checking in through the door), until Low falls into the Nowhere through his nightmares. During his time at the "Institute", he developed an imaginary friend to help him through everything, using his doll as a base. That doll and imaginary friend are Alone.
While in the Nowhere, Low was able to manifest Alone into an actual physical being but she can only exist while Low was in that world, hence why she was so skeptical to go through the mirror at the end of the game. She can only exist in the Nowhere, not reality. So once Low is gone, her source of existence, she vanishes.

The final chapter, titled the Institute, is a warped manifestation of the same place in reality. The Nowhere reflects the fears of children into twisted versions of themselves, same with certain figures/people. The end boss is supposed to be the Nowhere's version of Otto, twisted and warped through the childrens fears. However he still looks relatively normal, despite the long arms, because Otto was something the kids grew to fear and they had a face to go with that fear. His stretchy arms and eyes on his hands could represent how the kids could never escape him and how he was always watching.

Its easily the most complicated and lore heavy game of the trilogy, forcing you to look at an obscure outside media source to fully understand everything (which I shouldn't have to say is a bad thing). Its the weakest of the games for me, personally, but can still be fun at times. If I've missed anything, I'll try to answer questions in replies but I hope this helps people understand certain aspects that would otherwise be lost

Okay, here's a little breakdown (actually more of a theory) of the story of this game. (Or should I say games)

Basically for you guys to fully understand it, there is an audiobook on youtube called "Sounds of Nightmares". It's audiobook about a man named Otto (basically the final boss dude) tries to find his daughter. Because his daughter got lost in a place called "The Nowhere".

The Nowhere is the place you guys played through in all the other games. In the third game you visit many different areas of the Nowhere. But in Little Nightmares 1. You visit only 1 place called the Maw (the ship) and in Little Nightmares 2 you visit 2. The Forest where the Huntsman is. And the Pale city where you face the thin man and the tv's.

And all the characters you play as through the games are basically children that ended up in the nowhere. Such as Six, Mono and now with Low ( and other kids that we don't know). Those are basically kids that ended up in the nowhere. The Nowhere only takes kids. Not adults. The kids get taken by the Ferryman as it is seen in the little nightmares comics (yes there's novels and comics of it).

But the Nowhere only takes kids who experience or are experiencing trauma. They basically get taken by their minds and get placed in the Nowhere from their world called "The Counties" (which I think is our world). Meanwhile if you listened to the audiobook. Otto tries to get his way into the Nowhere by studying other children's minds with devices. Which makes him see the things that's happening to the kids. Basically using drugs and all other types of stuff on the kids to make them enter this world just to find his daughter.

And by doing this, Otto and the institute he uses to experiment on the kids becomes a place in the Nowhere. And since the Nowhere is filled with Nightmares Otto and the institute becomes a Nightmare itself. That's why you see a big monster of him and the laboratory at the final stage of the game. Because of him, many children feared him, and one of them was Low that feared him. Low imagined this friend when he was alone in his room, basically to comfort him from what he was going through. But when he was in the Nowhere. His friend came with him. Basically becoming this person that wasn't in his imagination anymore. She was real. But when Low left back to the Residents at the end. Alone couldn't exist anymore. So she disappeared. She needed the kid (AKA Low) who imagined her into the Nowhere in order to survive. That's why she was hesitate to leave. She knew she couldn't survive. That's why the mirror spit her back out. She couldn't belong in the Residents world

But what about Six and Mono from the first and second? Well... Basically in those games. They are basically lost causes. Because when a kid goes to the Nowhere and stays there for a long period of time. They began to grow into Nightmares themselves. Six becomes the lady in the first game and Mono as you know becomes the Thin Man in the second game. And other kids who grow up in the Nowhere become adults. Basically like the guests from the first game and the viewers from the second. Basically growing up in the Nowhere is a bad thing. Because the longer they stay. The more they lose memory before they come just chunky or slim mindless humans. The kids even lose their memories while they enter the Nowhere too. Because in the comics the kids start to lose their memories when they arrive there.

But there is also this time loop thing as you know at the end of the second game. Which is a plot hole. Maybe that can be answered in a fourth game? But here's my take on it. They are stuck in the Nightmare forever. They need to keep living it over and over and over until they or someone breaks them out of it. Low was one of the few kids that managed to break the cycle and escape. Because of the help he had from his friend Alone.

(And honestly that's basically it)

okay, so i very much could be wrong here and this will probably be poorly worded, but i think the whole premise of the game is that Low is trying to get home. the Nowhere (the setting that all of the games take place in) is a dream land that is real, as in Low vanishes from the real world and ends up there every time he falls asleep. Alone is his imaginary friend based off of the stuffed toy he has (obviously), however due to the Nowhere being a place influenced by the minds of children, she is able to exist. Low wants to escape the Instituion and Otto, the doctor of the institution, so he does so by travelling through the Nowhere when he sleeps. The picture at the end that shows him and Alone in front of a house shows that he wants to go back home and bring her with him, but because she isn't real, she can't go, and without Low in the Nowhere, she ceases to exist

The one part where it show that Low was in the asylum room with his drawings and the doll is Low's past. The ending shows that Low returned to the real world. Alone was just part of his subconsciousness, basically his imaginary friend helping him throughout the entire game til the end. Alone couldn't go with Low in the ending because she isn't real.

My husband and I got a bug with the arm in the last chapter when we died before smashing the glass on the floor and had to restart the entire chapter because we couldn’t see ourselves the entire run path when it reloaded at the checkpoint. The rest of the arm was on the map and we could walk through it but it took up practically all of the path on the screen
