That 3 finger sign from Marcos Alonso is one of the more iconic pictures in PL history.

I remember this game. Arsenal slapped Chels 3 - 0, and Conte went back to his roots, and the rest is history

"Just another manager from abroad that couldn't adapt" 😂😂😂 in a country in which no domestic manager ever won the PL. The reputation of the PL is so delusional.

Oh man I remember this game. The back 3 brought us the Premier League under Conte and the UCL with TT. It's a part of our modern history and identity.

Everyone was so convinced a back 3 would never work in the Premier League until Conte unleashed Marcos Alonso and Victor Moses on the league

This was a true tactical masterstroke. No Chelsea fan at the time (that I encountered) ever considered us playing a back 3 effectively but once he did it, it became so obvious why we should've been playing it for years with the team we had then.

- How to minimalize David Luiz's recklessness was a problem many managers dealt with - AVB didn't address it, Benitez played him at DM, Mourinho just sold him - in hindsight of course the answer was playing him as the libero in the 3. So obvious.

- Azpi had all the attributes to play CB (more effectively than RB or LB) except one, he was terrible in the air! The way to get him there without becoming a liability? Back 3, of course.

- Matic was arguably the best holding midfielder in the league back then, but his lack of pace & agility meant we needed to play a runner next to him (usually Ramires) & with Azpi & Brana at FB that really limited our attacking potential to "get the ball to Hazard & he'll do something". One solution to this dilemma? Back 3 as it allows the freedom to play more offensive minded players, like Moses, in the WB positions giving us more dynamism.

All these things were so clear but everyone was wedded to the idea of a back 4 just being a given. Remarkable looking back lol

A similair game is from 21st of December 2005 when a struggling Roma recieved Chievo at home. Beating them 4-0. During that season Roma had used Totti, Cassano and Nonda as their main attacking force. However Nonda was injured and Cassano was about to be sold to Real Madrid leaving Roma with only Totti as their sole.

This lead Spalletti into bringing in the, then modern 4-2-3-1, but with a twist. Putting Totti up front instead of the prefered 10 role. Totti dropped deep from the 9 position creating space behind him that was occupied by Mancini, Taddei and Perrotta. Creating chaos in the opponents backline. The rebirth of the false 9 made a mediocre Roma side go from 10th place up to a 4t place, finishing the season on 5th place. Breaking the Serie A record for most games one in a row with 11 games won in a row. Adding insult to injury by setting the new record on Stadio Olympico against Lazio.

The revival of the false 9 led to Messis most dominant position and Spains Euro 2012 championship. And with its revival it is in the playbook of modern day football.

It would be great to have a breakdown of how Conte won Serie A with Napoli

This entire season was 17/18 city before 17/18 city. 93 points is the most points in the league at that time since 04/05 Chelsea. Truly an unforgettable season
