Emilia closed her eyes is an anime change, in the source material, she was ready to fight back against Regulus

From what I've heard, the Break Time reveal about Al was actually cut content from back in Arc 3 (Season 1 2nd half), from around when he was just introduced.
And those Shorts often present some neat Lore bits about the world and characterization that were hard to fit into the anime for budget, time or pacing constraints.

Al's name is Aldebaran which is a star in the Taurus constellation. The name means 'follower' in Arabic, because the star seems to follow Pleiades (Japanese name Subaru) on the knight sky. So far Al, Subaru and the archbishops are the only characters to be named after stars if I remember correctly. He'll definitely be an important character in some future arc

The break time shorts are weird. I think you have to watch all of them from season 1 on to get what they are. They seem like they are going to be silly, extraneous bits of information and unnecessary to the narrative, but honestly I cant wholey say they are? I'll keep it anime only but I do have the forbidden knowledge of reading the main text and it's side stories, and that will come up as I think its a symptom of the author's style rather than anything else.

A lot of the shorts are actually just cut content that get added back in, all the way from back at season 1. That's part of why the fanbase is so obnoxious about asking youtubers to watch them. A lot of it IS just world building stuff, or little slice of life things, but since they are often actual cuts from the main narrative added back in in a cheaper animation style, the author had already written up through the end of season 3 at the time of the first season of the anime airing with the expectation that you already knew these facts. There is an early break time short in season 1 that explains how the time system works in Re Zero, its 4 colour coded parts of the day, and this is just used passively throughout the series from then on - the red lighting in the second season when Elsa breaks into the mansion the first time is because their 'clocks' are all at Fire time, the red hours of the day in the afternoon. In season 3, when Regulus kidnaps Emilia, and then looks up at the clock tower as it changes colour and says "free time is over", that's not like a witch cult signal or anything, its assumed you the audience know that's just the clock tower striking the start of the Fire time, essentially noon. They were just waiting until a certain time to head to their watergates.

But there's a lot of little details like that. We knew way back in like the first break time that Reinhardt had WAY too many divine protections, and the breaktime was used heavily in the latter half of season 2 to add back in little character moments for Otto, Garfiel, Elsa, and Meili that had to be cut for time. None of this seems important, but some of those scenes are important to understanding later character motivation. It's never the ONLY way you can learn about a characters motivation, but that's due to the strength of Tappei as a character writer I think, not the implication of the shorts. But I haven't ever thought of them as something you can just throw them out as never mattering to the main anime. Except Re:Petit. We were cheated with that one.

edit: I forgot to say! If the shorts weren't important, they wouldnt make subtitled versions to add to the BluRay releases. I have the funimation/crunchyroll blurays on my shelf and they shorts are included. Official subs exist!... for season 1... The fact that Crunchyroll doesnt sub season 2 or 3, or dub any of it should be the actual discussion. As far as I can tell these are pushed reasonably in Japan, its Crunchyrolls fault we dont think about them in the English speaking world.

**I wont call the next part a spoiler warning as I use the vaugest of terms I can manage and still make my point, but if you don't even want to be aware that there is something to consider about things you dont know about, then stop reading! Just trust me when I say putting Al in the Break time is chump change for the Re Zero author, and that this 'problem' if you want to think of it that way will probably only get worse.**

The big problem is Tappei, the author, is a damn troll sometimes. He doesn't seem to care where he writes his salient information at so long as its written and technically available. He is notorious for putting things that seem like world changing revelations about characters in the most asinine places. Its not like its the only way to ever learn these facts, hes good about reintroducing those ideas. But just like how he love to plainly show something the audience thinks they understand but then recontextualize it later as Subaru understands it better to flip its meaning, he love just blatantly dropping what seem like big lore bombs in out of the way places that are hidden in plain sight and just playing with that tension when the audience knows something Subaru doesn't sometimes. Its far less obvious in the anime that he does this.

First example, for both season1 and season 2, as the Japanese BluRay was releasing during the broadcast, if you preordered from certain vendors, you would get a voucher for that BluRay disk. And if you collected one voucher for each BluRay disk, you could send them in and redeem them for a paper copy of an expanded What IF story. The books cost like 300$ each now because you had to buy 12 seperate DVD releases, it was prohibitively expensive and very few people bothered to redeem the books I think. But when one of the big fandom personalities translated the Season 2 one (which was even lower print run and distribution thanks to covid) he was like "there are game changing spoilers for future stuff in this book." Turns out there was facts established about certain characters (whom where actually cut from the anime almost entirely) that seemed to make the Al breaktime revelation seem small in comparison.

Or EVEN WORSE, there is a reveal that fundamentally changed the way fan theories were structured foundationally in the ISEKAI QUARTET MOVIE. It's still up in the air if its actually Canon, but the reveal was just introducing a character to that universe that straight up had just never appeared in any of Tappei's writing as of yet, but that had come up enough in lore that people did huge double takes. And then he got on twitter and was talking about how he wrote the parts about that character for the movie, and how he was excited to reveal them. I wish I could find the incriminating tweets so that I'm not just going on memory. Heck there were reveals IN HIS TWEETS as season 2 was airing. Things that he had never even stated in the web novel or Light novel, let alone the anime. The man has no chill.

That aside, the just sheer amount of side stories he releases with every volume (there's like 300 side stories), and how since the narrative fundamentally follows Subaru's point of view, means that often other character POVs end up as side stories - which are often another source of break time shorts. That ends up happening far more frequently after season 3, so unless they add the side stories into the main anime (which they havent done much if any of but isn't impossible except for the fact that the story pacing will be...tough to say the least), these will almost assuredly end up as breaktime shorts which you will be expected to follow just so you aren't lost when certain character pop up in certain places.

Personally I love sifting through the piecemeal story structure like I'm Gandalf rummaging through the archives at Minas Tirith trying to figure out what the heck that spooky ring Bilbo had was. I totally get that its not for everyone, nor does it lend itself to well structured TV. I pray for the production commitee going forward, I really do. To really sum it all up nicely I loved a tweet from Tappei last August-ish, "I decided to stop worrying about how the scenes I write will be depicted in anime and to just write what I enjoy." He doesn't give a f if xD I think he has just lobbed a lot of hardball decisions at the production team and does his best to tell them whats too important to cut, and to stress that they have to tell the audience certain things somehow, hence the Shorts. That's the nature of a huge sprawling work of mystery novels though; at the end of the day, the anime will just never be the best way to experience the story, you just have to make too many concessions to the medium, and the shorts for as much as they are goofy little unimportant slice of life are also a band-aid that the production team uses from time to time to shore up understanding.

All breaktime shorts are canon and S2 and S3 ones have some really important ones too.
Regular anime watchers might be fine with not watching them, but if you wanna theory craft, checking on them as well as on cut content is critical if you wanna be on the top of your game, like with Al being sus with calling Betty Beako (I get not checking out cut content though, some of that stuff might get moved up in future anime episodes, I wont be mentioning anything from that). I really wish you went further on the popular theory (now it isnt spoilers after breaktime drops such a huge hint)that...

(my ANIME ONLY theory, no light novel spoilers I aint a reader)
... Al is somehow alternate timeline Subaru, we have the Beako thing, isekai thing, his casual mannerism is similar to Subaru, if you up the brightness on episode 57 frame of Al face you get similar eye shape and brown color, as well as some scars, he has experience with the witch cult, and I mean cmon the helmet hiding an identity, how convenient.
Few things start making sense if you go from there, as for the details of his circumstances, he seems to be from some failed timeline where he might have got together with Emilia but things didnt go well, he tried being a hero but failed, thats why he was such a doubter in Subaru at episode 57, and why he didnt expect Emilia having a character development and not wanting to get rescued asap, he was suspiciously suprised at that, and sulky (or bitter?) at Subaru having such a great moment after saying he couldnt do that himself. When Subaru was speeching about "not ending alone since your head will fill with sensless thoughts, I know from experience" the camera focused on Al for some reason. He also probably conveniently dropped the flood on the city at the right moment, how did he get that knowledge? It doesnt seem like he knows Subaru has RBD though. Him following Priscilla also goes well with this theory, if he was disapointed in Emilia being too weak and passive (which she kinda is pre-S2 character growth) he might have wanted to back someone truly strong and confident, Priscilla being perfect embodiment of that. Priscilla also always says world is operating for her benefit, ... kinda sus.

Web Novel reader here, I'm halfway through arc 8, and I keep being surprised by your videos. I never thought about the "multiple gluttonies and how they would've figure out there's multiple had they used names instead". As well as the Reinhard "downloading" the blessing of the swordsman rather than just a badly timed coincidence.

When it comes to the shorts, and what they show, let's think back on season 1 and season 2's shorts
Have those shown information that was relevant in season 2/season 3 of the anime? If so, then we can expect that season 3's shorts should still be considered when speculating

Kuddos

Having critical lore in the shorts doesn't surprise me at all. Heck, the author even drops important lore in side stories that are exclusive to certain shops, comic alive, mobile games and even cross overs like the Isekai Quartet movie. Lots of the side stories remain untranslated too, which is such a bummer.

Wonderful commentary and insight, as always. I think your question regarding Joshua Juukulius is a great observation. As you mentioned, there really hasn't been opportunity to bring his name up in conversation, so it's ambiguous as to whether anything happened or not. It's certainly suspicious given the manner of their introduction. I also thought your point regarding the archbishops and their names and titles poignant - as you say, there's potential for Subaru and company to be under incorrect assumptions regarding the nature and number of threats of Gluttony in the city.
