I got a Parker Jotter for High School Graduation in 1968. Still have it, along with the blue top box it came in.

Thanks - I love my stainless steel Parker Jotter - it's given me decades of excellent service.

The cartridge is the only thing that matters with a ball point. There are 'universal' ballpoint pens that take unlimited different cartridges, which makes a lot of sense.

I was gifted a Mount Blanc fountain pen which used ink. Unfortunately after 3 years it started to leak ink and was told that I will have to pay for the transport to and from the Company and may take a few months. 2 fountain pens later, I finally gave up on Mount Blanc. The Cross or Parker fountain pens with ink are both cheaper and last much longer

I have six of the seven pens featured here, all are great. The Parker Sonnet is very hard to beat.

A few points. Cross charges a fee for the repair. Waterman is not still in France, it like its corporate cousin, Parker, was founded in the USA and was sold to European buyers. They are now actually owned by a U.S Corporation. Your points regarding Montblanc are well made. I own Waterman, Parker, Cross, Sailor and several of the newer premium brands. I also was gifted a Montblanc, a rollerball. I learned as a young man that the quality sought out in premium ballpoint and rollerball pens is in the refill. I do not do fountain pens, but if I did I would probably buy the Japanese icon brands.

I’ve had all brands of pen over the years. I still have a Montblanc Starwalker ballpoint and a Meisterstuck 149 fountain pen. Mainly because I’m petrified of losing them. I rarely use the 149 because it leaks but love the Starwalker which feels so good to write with. Never had any problem with the ink blotting, I think that’s definitely a fallacy. But a Montblanc pen is not desired because it writes well it’s because it’s a luxury product which makes a statement. The same reason people buy a Bentley when a Toyota does the same job, and more reliably. However in all my years of using pens the one I’ve used the most is the Bic Cristal. I guess that speaks volumes.

When I was at uni I had a few nice pens, mainly used ballpoints for my lecture note taking. For three years I used a Parker Sonnet in my lectures, tutorials and assignments.
But when I had an exam and I had to write for 1-2 hours under stress I always used my Montblanc Classique ballpoint.
It was just that bit more comfortable in size and weight and was easier to write with.
I used the Sonnet for everything else mainly because the refills were cheaper 😅
That was 23 years ago and I still have both pens.

There is an important point, which is missing. One of the reasons ballpoint pens are used is because their ink is waterproof, unlike fountain pens and rollarballs. This is why, ballpoint pens are recommended in an examination. In this regard, Uni pens are not true ballpoint pens. However much I like them, this is a crucial drawback that I cannot ignore.

I do like a Parker Jotter. And also the Parker Vector. I still have a number of Vectors with company names on them. Many of which don’t exist any more.
