UTIs Explained By Urogynecologist: What Works and What Doesn't

And a few of the things sold specifically for UTI prevention have almost no evidence behind them at all. In this episode of Talking With Docs, Dr. Brad Weening and Dr. Paul Zalzal speak with urogynecologist Dr. Carolyn Best about urinary tract infections — what they are, how they're properly diagnosed, what actually helps prevent them, and what's being oversold. UTIs are extremely common, particularly in women, and most people will deal with at least one. But there's a lot of confusion around testing, treatment, and prevention — including a widespread misunderstanding about what antibiotic resistance actually means. It's the bacteria that develop resistance, not the person. That distinction matters, and it's part of why completing a prescribed course is so important. She also addresses the prevention products people spend the most money on. Cranberry has a plausible mechanism and some supporting evidence for recurrent infections. Hydration helps flush the system. D-mannose and vitamin C, despite how widely they're marketed, aren't well supported for either prevention or treatment.
