Cobalt based lithium batteries like those found in that vape pen, power tools, your cell phone, most EV's can have catastrophic thermal runaway and start a fire if damaged or abused. LFP, lithium Iron Phosphate, which is what is used in RV's does not have this issue. They will burn if the fire started somewhere else but will not be the cause of the fire. The propane tank strapped to the front of the trailer is also dangerous and will fuel a fire that was started somewhere else. Storing energy is dangerous regardless of what form we use to do it. Due care should be taken with any system but please don't spread bad information that all lithium batteries are the same, chemistry matters and lithium is just one part of that equation.

Uncle Joe has off-gassing too! We’ve been trying to store him outside for years!

Seconding @WilliamNau. RV Lithium batteries are Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) which is a different chemistry than the lithium batteries in your laptop, vape pen, power tools, etc. They do NOT have the same properties with respect to fire potential. The cells are sealed, which is in my opinion much safer than blocks full of toxic lead and caustic sulfuric acid that off-gas toxic fumes.

LiFeP04 batteries do not burn hot like lithium ion batteries which are difficult to extinguish.

As a guy who just went through this conversion, without even involving a solar system of any kind, there are additional things you should consider beforehand, such as:

Your original lead/acid hangs at about 12.7v charged, with the converter holding your system at ~13.4v when on shore power. Your new lithium hangs at about 14.2v charged, with the converter holding your system at ~14.6v when on shore power. Turns out that your factory systems (like fridge, WH, CO/propane detector) are likely all comfortable with that boost... but have you added anything (like a CPAP or modem) that would object to it? (Sigh...) You may need to buy a 12-24VDC-to-12VDC converter for each to keep them happy.

If you shop for a bigger box to fit your new lithium on your existing external rails, you may believe it can't be done without mechanical modification. Not necessarily. Keep in mind that both batteries and boxes are often not rectangular, but slanted top to bottom. The dimensions given for the case will always be the smallest (bottom), while the dimensions given for the battery will always be the largest (top). Be positive that a potential box or battery actually will not fit before removing it from consideration.

If you talk gas tanks, it's the type of gas on the tank

Another advantage for LiFeP04 batteries are that they have a stabile voltage all the way down to 10% SOC. Voltage does not drop under 12V. Electronics will work in the sweet-spot 13.3 to 12.7V all the time. Higher voltage means less current. Lead-acid voltage curve is totally different. @ 50% SOC it is 11.8V. (No load) electronics do not like low voltage.

I agree; everybody’s situation is different. I rarely boondock. I use a marine battery and instead of a gasoline generator, I carry a Bluetti AC200L. They are on sale for $799 and have a 30 amp outlet I can simply plug my RV into. I don’t have a fortune invested and when not camping, I can use the Bluetti for other things. Cheers and happy camping.
