I had to have emergency surgery for a ruptured esphogus and the procedure was a left thoracotomy. During the surgery the surgeon discovered that I also had a hiatal hernia (oh dear) and he repaired both of them. When I woke up in the recovery room the nurses told me how lucky I was to have such a brilliant surgeon. After my recovery I sent him a heartfelt letter thanking him for saving my life.

Interesting breakdown. It’s a good reminder that behind every salary figure are years of training, sacrifice, and tradeoffs that most people never see.

Get the 'real' numbers then divide by hours to get $/hr. Now consider cost of education. Most docs work for a hospital corp and salaries, as well as practice methods are outside their control.

Interesting stats. Decent as an overview, but the granular data is never gonna make it into big databases because those who make higher amounts may not report. As an example, I’m an ophthalmologist and make more annually than the “average” neurosurgeon. Having said that, I do a high volume of cataract/refractive surgery and work more hours weekly than the typical ophthalmologist.

My ex is a locum tenens anesthesiologist. He gets paid a premium. When I met him, he was making $26,000/ week.

You forgot an important factor. Location. Same doctor with same experience can make vastly different amounts depending on where he/she practices. Its not high cost of living vs low cost of living, but rather high living standard vs low living standard locations.

Airline captain and check airman.. I'm making $630K yr average over last 3 years ... not as much as the highest Doc's but I'm also off 18 days a month.

Hi Dr. Jubbal, thank you so much for everything you do! I really enjoy your content. I think a video about non-traditional / non clinical career options in medicine—like consulting or other alternative paths—would be super interesting and valuable. It’s always a recurring topic on medical school Reddit, but what it actually entails is often pretty confusing.

It's fascinating how wide the salary gap is between specialties. Income matters, but the years of training, workload, stress, and patient responsibility deserve just as much attention. Great breakdown! 👏📊
