I read his book and it is disturbing. This guy makes a joke of it. That just shows the power of humour as a coping mechanism. A very strong mother / son bond there.

We have a saying in French: Mieux vaut en rire qu’en pleurer. (It’s better to laugh about it than to cry about it.) Being able to find the humor in this tragedy is truly a gift. I remember reading about this incident in your memoir, one of the best (and funniest!) I’ve read in my life.

I read Trevor’s book years ago where he talks about this happening, and then found a version that was edited for children (!), and my daughter and I read that together when she was 10 or 11. We still talk about it sometimes, and she’s nearly done with high school now. I highly recommend it, especially the audio book which Trevor narrates.

This happened to me too - my mother-in law when into the hospital in the Philippines for a stroke. It was 350,000 due when she checked out.... Philippine pesos. That translates to $7k USD. I was a hero.
