I still find it very funny when atheists are called "nones" in studies, because it sounds like you're saying nuns aren't religious.

I'm an atheistic agnostic, but a lot of times I just say I'm an atheist, especially when I'm talking to religious evangelical extremist because if I tell them I'm agnostic then they tend to behave toward me as if they have their foot in the door and I just don't feel up to hearing their proselytizing.

A tourist sits down at an Irish pub in County Cork and begins speaking to an old timer at the bar. They get to talking about the tourist's trip and his appreciation for old churches across the Emerald Isle.

The Old Timer asks "Well, are you Catholic or Protestant?"

The Tourist, knowing it is a touchy subject in Ireland says "I'm actually an Atheist"

The Old Man follows up with "Alright then, are you a Catholic Atheist or a Protestant Atheist?"

I am agnostic; I don't know how many gods exist, or even if any. I also cannot conceive that the universe has limits, or that it doesn't. I know I will never be able to answer these questions. I accept this idea, and it doesn't bother me. The following quote is attributed to Socrates (5th century BC): "All I know is that I know nothing."

the part about "credibility enhancing displays" rings so true to me. I am a Christian, and I grew up as one. In many respects I'm pretty far from what my parents believe. we attend very different denominations, vote for different parties, disagree about many doctrines - tbh, we're so far apart I don't even talk to them about faith any more because it leads to arguments - but in spite of all of that, growing up I always knew that God loved me because of my parents and the church. we grew up very poor and sometimes people from church would leave anonymous checks in our mailbox to pay for our rent, when we could no longer to afford to own the house we lived in, a guy from church bought it and didn't charge us anything extra for rent, and every christmas my parents would take me and my siblings to a homeless shelter to help serve food - even though we didn't have very much either. all of that was incredibly meaningful to me, and showed me that God was bigger and more real than any political party, or nation-state, or doctrinal view of scripture. while i do think there are logical ways to reason for a creator, as a system of belief it was a very emotional view that led me to believe in God, not a logical one. i don't think logic alone could've convinced me one way or the other

After learning more about religions (thanks to your channel) I do feel like "Do you believe in god?" is an incomplete question because most of us aren't even clear on what "god" IS. It may mean vastly different things to different people so how can you compare one person's belief in "god" to another, unless you first define god?

The tone of this study feels kinda like when a religious person asks “why do you hate god?” when you tell them you don’t believe in one. Knowing it’s funded by a Christian group makes perfect sense. This might seem super valuable to agnostics and religious people but from an atheist perspective this feels like it really only applies to atheists that have left Christianity or another abrahamic religion. For someone who was raised by an animist and a hippie new age agnostic, the questions just don't make any sense. "if god was on the other side of the door" only makes sense if you imagine a god that can be on the other side of a door. An animist would laugh at that question, what, all the rocks, trees, air, dirt, people and animals are on the other side of the door? Then what am i doing over here? The “energy in the universe” is on the other side of the door? Okay? I’m not sure how to even picture that. There really aren’t any emotions attached to these things for me. If the god on the other side of the door is the god my evangelical cousins believe in, which is the only god in the mix that could actually feasibly be imagined on the other side of a door, I might be moving the other way but even then I don’t think they would be considered very correct about their interpretation of god even by the metrics of most other Christians. The whole line of questioning feels like it’s meant to portray agnostics as confused lost Christians who want to come home and atheists as angry god haters. As an atheist if you answer that you’d be neutral or positive towards god then someone can go “aha you’re ripe for conversion” so you learn to answer those questions in a firm, maybe even aggressive way to get people to stop trying to convert you. But then if you answer too negatively they dismiss you as a god hating demon. I personally suspect that’s where a lot of the negative emotions are coming from on the atheist side, you’re not answering as an atheist or agnostic in a vacuum, you’re answering as an atheist or agnostic in relation to the religious practices and beliefs of the people around you.

I call myself an apathist, meaning I don't care if there is a deity or not because that knowledge affects me in no way at all.
