  My grandmother’s cousin owned and lived at Nottoway for many years and eventually died there some years ago. She described to me Belle Grove that was still standing when she first moved to Nottoway. Henry Howard was a very influential architect whose achievements have not always been recognized.

  My family is from Iberville Parish, and my great great grandfather did the plaster work in Nottoway.  My grandmother was born at a plantation across the road from Nottoway.  My grandmother used to go to parties at Belle Grove when she was a young woman.

  Belle Grove was such a tragic loss.  Architecturally, I find it much more attractive and more Grecian than Nottoway.  Nottoway always looked to me like a poor man's version of Belle Grove.  Henry Howard and James Gallier were the two great architects of the River Road between New Orleans and Baton Rouge as well as in New Orleans proper.

  I really like it, the colors work for me. Plain white supposedly looks more Greek but that isn&apos;t actually how Greek architecture looked when it was alive and inhabited.
