PACIFIC HURRICANE TRAIN | Polo Hits Baja, Rachel Next + U.S. Flood Threat

The Pacific hurricane train keeps rolling, with multiple tropical systems stretching across the basin and another surge of tropical moisture potentially setting the stage for major rainfall across parts of the United States this week, and maybe continuing well into October. Hurricane Polo slammed into Baja California Sur overnight, bringing dangerous winds, torrential rainfall, and flash flooding, and is continuing into Sonora, Mexico. Even after Polo moves inland, its influence does not necessarily end there. Deep tropical moisture from the eastern Pacific is getting pulled northward into the Southwest and eventually farther into the Plains and Midwest. Behind Polo, Rachel continues to strengthen south of Mexico and could become the next hurricane in an extraordinarily active Pacific. With storm after storm developing across the basin, the Pacific hurricane train remains one of the biggest weather stories heading into October. Farther west, Hurricane Nolo is no longer a Category 5, but it remains another powerful part of this remarkable Pacific pattern after undergoing an extraordinary period of rapid intensification near Hawaii. Nolo will bring heavy rainfall to Kauai and maybe Oahu but will stay west of the islands. For the United States, the biggest story next week may ultimately be the tremendous amount of Pacific moisture moving north. That moisture could interact with weather systems over the mainland and produce a multi-day heavy rainfall event from portions of the Southwest into the Plains and Midwest. Flash flooding could become a concern, while prolonged rainfall may also threaten row crops that have not yet been harvested. Looming over this exceptionally active stretch is a very strong El Niño, helping shape the larger-scale atmospheric environment across the Pacific. No individual hurricane can be blamed directly on El Niño, but the broader pattern is providing abundant heat and moisture that can help support powerful storms and episodes of very heavy rainfall.
