  In the early days, it was the wacky race.  My father took me to Paris to see the departure of the race in 1980, I was 9 years old.  The Marreau brothers certainly embodied the early spirit of the Paris Dakar.

  The grainy low res video and audio format is the perfect fit for this ultra madness. The only inconsistent part is that the filmakers somehow failed to capture the blind flamethrower guitarist strapped to one of the supporting trucks. Oftherwise 10/10.

  I have a deep nostalgia of the former Paris Dakar. By leaving Paris, the dream of travel and adventure was tangible; these crazy pilots (mostly "ordinary" citizens that spared money for years to get the ticket and prepare vehicules) were anonymous becaming heroes like Marreau brothers. There were some "stars" in the race too but they had hard life as the others (son of prime minister Margaret Thatcher has been lost in the desert for 6 days!). No GPS : that involved great skills to navigate with a map and a compass in the desert with sometimes magnetic aberration due to iron in hills of Niger. From the mud and cold in France to the Sahara, african steppes, tropical forest and then the beach of Dakar, we were traveling, suffering, crying with them. Nowadays, too much money, too much stars, less proximity, less humanity, less sharing with locals and with the public: there is no more magic.
