One of the many reasons there are so many homeless and it's only going to grow is the cost of living crisis. There are so many people living in their cars or doubled up, we are truly barely surviving in the US.

I definitely have reverse culture shock, after living in Mexico for twenty years. I’ve only been back to the states, about ten times in twenty years. Each time feels culturally different. I see so many new items and the process of doing things, such as paying for something is new to me. The traffic in the U.S. is mind boggling. In Mexico, I am used to the tax already being included in the asking price, something I really love, no surprises at check out. I like the friendliness of the people. If I am short on money at the corner store, the owner says no problem, pay the next time you come in. After my last visit to the states, I realized that not only has the U.S. changed in twenty years, I have also changed. I have adapted to a more peaceful way of life in Mexico.

I live just outside of Ajijic and concur with the sentiments in this podcast. There’s lots of retired gringos here and most of the time they will walk by you and not make eye contact or say hello. Not so with the Mexican neighbors. They say ‘buen dia’ and smile. It’s a charming country on many levels !

Thank you both so much for your video. I am from San Francisco as well and miss the 1980s which I spent as an early teen through age 23. I love the way you incorporated your impressions about the individualism so many are struggling to cope with!

Eye contact......that alone is so different. And it's not hostile, it's welcoming.

I lived in Mexico for 2 years but back in the states now and definitely plan to go back. When I lived in Mexico, the biggest thing I missed about the US was American comfort foods. I always had a craving for pot roast, beef stew, macncheese, and I also missed certain international cuisines that were hard to find in Mexico like Vietnamese, Korean, Indian and Ethiopian. Now that I’m back in the states I really miss the neighborhood taco stands where I ate a good portion of my weekly meals, certain fruits and vegetables that are more scarce in the US, shopping at abarrotes at corner of every street, a more relaxed way of life. Living in Mexico taught me that I can be happy and fulfilled without an abundance of material possessions. There I worked to live, in the states I live to work. I just need nice weather, a few friends, nice community, and busying myself with activities I enjoy. Living near a beach is icing on the cake. I shall return to Mexico soon enough.

I've never experienced a restaurant with a time limit like you described. If a restaurant kept reminding me like they did you, I would never return. I rarely stay 1.5 hours at a restaurant, but to be constantly reminded of a deadline is so rude.

My husband and I come to San Miguel in the winter for three months. (as to a lot of Americanos and Canadians). We love the very things that you address- the friendliness, Tienda, Instituto, where we take classes, laid-back atmosphere that allows you to relax… Especially coming from the US now. We hope to get to meet you! Thanks for the great videos.
