Sonny Rollins Said Rock Had No Real Improvisation — The Man Next to Him Picked Up a Guitar

Sonny Rollins Said Rock Had No Real Improvisation — The Man Next to Him at the Bar Picked Up a Guitar November 1972. Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, Soho, London. Sonny Rollins is at the bar, hours before his show. He is forty-two years old. He has been playing jazz for thirty years. He knows exactly what improvisation is and what it requires and what it produces when it is done at the level he has spent his career learning to do it. He says it clearly: rock musicians don't improvise. They recite. They learn their solos and they play the same solos in the same places every single night and they call it music. In jazz, if you know exactly what's coming next, you're not improvising. You're performing a memory. At the other end of the bar, a young man in unremarkable clothes is sitting alone. He has heard every word. The barman leans over to Sonny and says something quietly. Sonny looks toward the other end of the bar. Then Sonny Rollins picks up his drink and walks over. "You heard that." "Yes." "There's a guitar in the corner. If I'm wrong — show me." What makes this story legendary: In February 1973, Jimmy Page entered a seminar at the Royal College of Music under a false name. Professor Edmund Carr had spent the morning explaining that Led Zeppelin was "first-year harmony" — that A minor to G to F to G was all Stairway to Heaven amounted to, that Kashmir was "repetition with production values." The quiet student at the back raised his hand. He walked to the board. He wrote four staves of notation showing the actual harmonic content of the music — the chromatic bassline, the suspended voicings, the rhythmic displacement that produced harmonic effects through timing rather than chord changes. He showed that seven distinct harmonic colours were being produced by what the chord chart described as four symbols. Then a student said quietly: "Kashmir was written by Jimmy Page." Carr published a paper in 1981 crediting "an unnamed composer who corrected my assumptions." Two months before that seminar, in November 1972, a different version of the same conversation happened in a different room. Sonny Rollins was not a music professor. He was one of the greatest jazz musicians alive, with thirty years of improvisation behind him and a specific understanding of what improvisation required that very few people on earth were qualified to challenge. He challenged Jimmy Page to show him. Jimmy picked up a battered acoustic guitar in the corner of a bar and played for six minutes. What he played was not a Led Zeppelin riff. It was not a demonstration of technical facility. It was music finding its shape as it was played, going somewhere before it knew where it was going, in the precise way that Sonny Rollins had spent thirty years describing as the thing that separated jazz from everything else. Sonny listened. He heard the thing he had said rock musicians couldn't do. Then he asked Jimmy why some of his solos stayed the same every night. And Jimmy gave him an answer about the debt musicians owe to the people listening — about the audience as a musical structure, not a constraint on the music but a part of it — that Sonny Rollins had not previously considered. "I still don't know if he was right," Sonny said, twenty years later. "But I thought about it for a long time after." That night, in the third set, something happened in the middle of a passage that had not been heading there. Four minutes. Then the music returned to where it knew itself to be. Jimmy Page left before the set ended. He never mentioned the evening. Sonny mentioned it once, obliquely, without naming the person. "Someone who was at the wrong bar that night," he said. "Or I was." The best conversations don't convince you that you were wrong. They show you that the category you were using was smaller than the thing you were trying to put inside it.
