The Oklahoma drill was brutal, especially me being a small DB when you got wrecked with the ball then having to flip to defense and try and stop someone fresh much bigger than you. This was high school 20 years ago, can't imagine 50 years ago.

I think that's why guys are always injured in these times.... they train year round... never giving their bodies a chance to rest...

    Things I remember:
Our weight room did not have air conditioning. They put a couple of fans in there to move the stale air around. And at least during the summer months they would open the two windows so we could at least get some fresh air.
They wanted to save cups and ice for the games so for practices the rigged a steel pipe welded onto some legs and drilled holes in it. They’d hook up a garden hose so the water came out of those holes like a fountain. Only downside was the hose would get super hot from sitting in the Texas sun and the water would come out warm. Not very refreshing.

At my high school in the 1960s we faced much the same regimen. No water during practice then after practice salt tablets, 2-a-day, Shake-It-Off, Tape-It-Up. Finally Stokley-Van Camp came out with Gatoraid, developed at the U Of Florida Gators, hence Gatoraid. Things started to change.

Back in the early 70’s if a player got hurt or got “slightly concussed “ the remedy our coaches had was A, take a salt tablet B, tape it up or C, take a lap or run it off !!! Salt tablets were miracle drugs back then and athletic tape was more valuable than your bus pass ! I forgot the amonia poppers. Water , there was a rumor of it sometimes .

23:10 -- Even as recently as the 90s Hayden Fox only had TWO main assistants...defensive coordinator Luther and special teams guy Dauber...apparently Hayden was his own offensive corrdinator?

It’s just what you did back then and it wasn’t only the Pro’s that did this . It was also in High School and College , just the way it was . In H.S. we had three a days , 2 hours in the AM , rest , then 21/2-3 hours until noon , rest and afternoon 1:30 - 3:00 . It was hard and exhausting but we did it . Complaints , yes . Aches , pain and injuries heck yea . But
Quitting, never entered our minds . Would I do it again ? In a heartbeat !!!
