I've not played with magnets and magnetic pigments but just a thought... You are placing the magnets on a metal tray so the direction of the magnets would be facing down and connecting with the tray (or you'd feel that repelling force) Perhaps an interesting experiment would be to use a plastic tray for these and to make sure the magnets are flipped the other way so you can see if they can have a greater effect on the pigments? These turned out great but it could be really interesting to see if it makes a difference when you're working with the attractive force of the magnets poles rather than the repelling forces. It looks like you were getting the lines between the hearts where they were pushing the pigments as far from each other as possible. You might get to see the heart shapes if the magnets were flipped. You can see this effect really clear where you had the ring of magnets around the outside and all the pigments getting pushed to the centre.

For the oddly shaped magnets, use a little double sided tape to help arranging. It won't always work if the magnets are too close or really strong but it might get them to hold just enough apart for you.

Idea: do layers with different colours, moving the magnets each time.

A resin clock mold would be interesting to experiment with.

I tell you one thing: it's not about shape, it's about power. The more powerful the magnet is, the more you can see the effects. And probably you'll see the best effects with 2 powerful magnets one opposite to the other.

I had seen it in UV resin, but not this. Awesome! It definitely looks like lightning strikes.

I look at nail art products to get ideas for resin, and the cats eye effect caught my attention, so I looked for the pigments to use with magnets on a bigger scale. I never thought of pouring with the magnets underneath. I've played with moving them around after pouring or painting in a clear coat over black by hovering over the surface before it sets, but it works better with UV resin so it doesn't move, so your idea is better for epoxy. You can make hearts with a v shape made out of paperclips attached to a longer magnet. I'm going to try with some speaker magnets with repelling force over the surface later, so it's funny your video popped up. Thanks for sharing. We are on the same page when it comes to getting an idea. I tend to go what would be considered overboard by others, too.

Pay attention to the polarity of the magnets; I think they’re chaining together across the resin.
For the hard-to-control magnets)balls, ovoids, etc.), try bedding them in dough, clay, or play-doh. Once you figure out what the colors are doing, you can guide shapes by consciously positioning the magnets, and you can make repeatable designs by gluing the ones you like.

I would experiment with single and dual arrangements, rather than using so many magnets at once; that way, you can learn how they act and interact faster. Adding small metal pieces to the magnet layout can give you more control, and different effects.

I used to do this technique, and I also found by taping a few flat round magnets to the underside of the mould you can get some really good effects. The closer the magnets are to the resin the better it works because it pulls metals closer to the surface. Good luck!!!
