To fit the situation, I'd make these changes to the story:<br><br>1. The King knew all along that his daughter was the thief. He even knew it before the first theft. (God is all-knowing.)<br>2. The punishments - 10 lashes, 20 lashes, etc.- weren't just going to be inflicted on the thief; everybody in the kingdom would get them. And their children and children's children. Forever. (Doctrine of Original Sin)<br>3. Rather than taking all 39 lashes, the King only takes 10. (Remember, Jesus didn't die for good or stay in Hell forever.)<br>4. After the King takes 10 lashes, everybody else in the kingdom is still on the hook for 40 lashes, but they can get out of it if they come in once a week to sing the King's praises and contribute to the King's slush fund. But miss a week, and they can still end up with the 40 lashes. (We can still end up in Hell if we don't do what the church tells us.)<br>5. As a kicker, it turns out the theft never happened and it was all a mistake. (We know from science that humanity did not descend from a single breeding pair; that's not how speciation works, and human DNA would show a bottleneck if our ancestors were ever in a very small group. Therefore, Adam and Eve never existed, and neither did Original Sin.)

Why does the story stop when the king dies? If the daughter is his only child, now she's the queen (or will be). Her crimes have put her in power, and now she can loot the treasury as she sees fit.

The best part of no longer being guided by religious fear is not having to live with the cognitive dissonance that would twist me up inside. I feel so free and authentic now. I would not want that King ruling my kingdom.

The obvious REAL reason why Jesus “had to die” is because he DID die. He died first, then the religion had to come up with a way to explain that. Since the concept of sacrifice was already part of the religion that became a good starting place. No difficult moral quandary required, just people making up the most obvious solution so as to not have to admit they were wrong.
