  I always thought the Bob Seeger version was about the trials and tribulations of a musician starting out, playing the venues and the loneliness associated with that. The Metallica version to my mind is about somebody trying to turn their life around but unable to do so. Trying to turn the page on their life. I’m not sure whether the Metallica had any input in the music video but that’s my interpretation of it. The woman in the video is an adult actress by the name of Ginger Lynn. I’ve always seen this video immensely disturbing and very sad.

  As a father with an 8 year old daughter and a 20 year old daughter, this video chokes me up everytime. I tear up for that little girl.

  I totally agree that you can’t compare the 2 versions because they’re both great and done completely different.  By the way the woman in the video is Ginger Lynn.  She was probably the biggest adult film stars in the 80s.

  i took on a road trip from halifax, nova scotia to new york city, in a van with six of my friends in 1998. we were headed to see a canadian band called &quot;the tragically hip&quot; at a ballroom in new york. this song came on the radio sometime around 2 or 3 a.m., as we were driving on the highway. might have been gonig through rhode island or connecticut? i can&apos;t recall that part for sure, but i will never forget listening to this for the first time. it was incredible. i agree, one of the best covers ever recorded.

  Musically, I love both versions about the same. However, Metallica&apos;s music video is a masterpiece.
