Fern a greenhouse in the backyard for your cactus and succulents makes an enormous difference in the growth and habit . I moved my entire collection outside last year into my greenhouse and it has been pretty awesome (I’m in Victoria).

Your monkey tail grows chaotic because of inconsistent lightning. I realize you do the best with what you have so it's completely understandable in your climate. But the skinnier parts are etiolated growth due to lack of adequate lightning. They like to be blasted with full sun to get the really uniform straight stems and I haven't seen them successfully (not crazy growth) grown inside. Love how quirky that makes yours! Maybe this upcoming winter try hanging it in the window to get sun and a slight temp decrease.

Something I learned this year was giving cacti and succulents too high of nitrogen in fertilizer can also make them etiolate so I switched to a 2-7-7 and now my 1yo monkey tail is flowering and happier.

The baby cactus was probably a pup cutting that was callused then potted. Do not water until roots grow into the soil.

Highly recommend getting a basic pair of work gloves for cacti specifically, I find that it really helps! LOVE the monkey tail, it's tendril-y and spooky in its own right 🦑

I’ve learned that they like a cold winter rest to flower.
