  I'm surprised Walker Air Force Base in Roswell isn't mentioned.  There's a lot of history in this base.

  Tears in my eyes after seeing Ft Ord on this list , I was stationed there from 1982 ./.1087 , light fighting Field Artillery unit , my best time in life was at Ft Ord Ca , seaside., Miss that base .

  I was stattioned at Fort ord from 1984 to 1996 as my 1st duty station. My Barracks and Maintenance shop were right smack in the middle of that "Off Limits" area!

  K..I.Sawyer AFB, located in Michigans upper peninsula. SAC base. B-52s KC-135s. Closed. 1995.

  I use to live on long Island NY and went to see Montak radar dish. At one time I remember seeing the radar working. But that was when I was 9 years old. And the base was still open. I've seen the base twice. And even found UXO's or un-exploed ordnance shells  buried near the top of the walking trails. I had to report it to the the state park police and they called the local police and the local fire department, along with the U.S. Military.  They had to test me, and make sure that I wasn't contaminated or hurt while I was there.  Yet nothing was wrong with me. I showed them where the uxo, was.  The Military personnel said that had I touched it, I'd not be telling my story.  There was enough explosive in that one shell to blow me up. So from that day on, I never went back there. That and the fact that I  moved to North Carolina in 2007. The base did have at least 3 artillery batteries.  And a number of water pump stations.  1 old barracks,  a old gas station, a px store for military personnel a chaple, and I think 3 guard booths. Montak to most people who live there know it as the end of the state of N.Y. At one time they did open the radar tower,  but not very long. After that they never opened again. Or the artillery batteries.

  Was at Westover AFB in or around Springfield Mass. Closed in 73/74.

  My dad was stationed at SF-88 before it became a NIKE site.  It provided AA protection for the Golden Gate bridge.  He started out as a radio operator went to OCS at Ft. Bragg then sent back as the commander.

  I remember Fort Tilden well. In the early 1970’s, I served in the Army in the Military Police at Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn, NY. For every shift, 24/7, we sent 2 MP’s to Fort Tilden to man the gate and patrol the area. When Fort Tilden ceased operations in 1974, the only troops left were the 2 MP’s from Fort Hamilton. It was desolate and boring. But the most annoying inconvenience was the lack of food. The mess hall had shut down, leaving us on our own. Fort Hamilton was too far away for us to chow down.Before long, the MP’s would go across the street to the Coast Guard Station to beg for a meal during chow time. It was never officially sanctioned by either the Army or the Coast Guard, just an informal and unwritten arrangement. To this day, I thank those Coasties for every morsel of food this hungry MP could swallow.
