Breathing New Life into Old, Worn-out Country Houses! Farmhouse Renovation In rural areas where many houses are decades old, extensive repairs are a given, but an increasing number of people are commissioning renovation work to change structures that were inconvenient to live in. The transformation of a country house begins by demolishing the structure, leaving only the wooden frame. Due to the characteristics of narrow and steep country roads, most sites are inaccessible to excavators, which are essential for demolition work! Workers must each wield a hammer to tear down the mud walls. Arms and shoulders tingle from the hammering that continues all day long. Even amidst the demolition work where dirt flies in all directions, the workers' primary concern is the collapse of the house. Although they have erected reserve pillars throughout the house to prevent collapse, there is no telling when or which part might crumble during the demolition process. Insulation work to block drafts—a constant worry for those living in open-sided homes during the winter—is a given. These are the people transforming country houses by lowering high thresholds that became inconvenient with age and exposing the rafters hidden above the ceiling to add the charm of a traditional Korean house! We visit the site of this magical transformation. Meanwhile, the trend for country houses in the 1980s was the "slab" style, where the roof served as the roof itself, allowing for various activities such as drying crops. However, it is said that the lack of a roof made these structures vulnerable to leaks and poor insulation, causing numerous inconveniences. Thus, a new trend recently gaining attention in the farmhouse renovation market is the "double roof" construction, which involves adding an extra roof to a Western-style house much like placing a traditional Korean hat on top. It is said to kill two birds with one stone, solving the fatal flaws of leaks and insulation while retaining the extra space needed to dry various crops! Although the construction is relatively short, lasting only about three or four days, the double roof installation, carried out on steel beams less than a handspan wide, is quite dizzying. A new trend in farmhouses born from an ingenious idea! We take a look at the site where a Hanok roof is being installed atop a Western-style house. ✔ Program Title: Extreme Jobs - Transformation of a Country House: Farmhouse Renovation and Natural Cave Construction ✔ Broadcast Date: 2019.11.20 #GolaDuneDocumentary #ExtremeJobs #Retirement #CountryHouse ▶ Watch Full Version: https://www.ebs.co.kr/ ▶ If you want to read the EBS documentary as an article, visit: https://egloos.com/ebsyoutube
