I personally think that women in Sri Lanka in the present and the past were treated far better than most other places of the world. Societal norms existed, but the genders roles were given with a hint of practicality. Women especially in the farming communities are the pillars of community.

Nice video. Also fun fact since you touched on female empowerment. Sri Lanka was the first country in the world to have a female head of state (Prime Minister Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike) back in 1960. Sri Lanka also had a female Executive President in late 90s and early 2000s (Chandrika Kumaranatunge) who was Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike’s younger daughter. So, in its limited democratic history of 78 years, Sri Lanka had 2 female heads of state spanning over 2 decades of rule. In that respect, Sri Lanka is leagues ahead of all Asian countries and even most Western countries who still have not been able to produce female heads of state.
