Die ganze Geschichte des Byzantinischen Reiches in 20 Minuten: Wie Rom 1.000 Jahre länger überlebte

🏛️ Rome didn't simply disappear in the fifth century. From Constantinople, the eastern Roman state continued to exist for more than a thousand years. Its inhabitants continued to call themselves Romans as emperors fought against Persians, Arab caliphates, Bulgarians, Crusaders, and finally, the Ottomans. At the heart of this story is Constantinople itself: a fortified city on the Bosporus that connected trade routes between Europe and Asia, imperial wealth, and the prestige of Rome. The main challenge was survival. How could an empire repeatedly lose territory, wealth, and armies—and still recover? 📜 IN THIS EPISODE: • why the people we call Byzantines called themselves Romans; • why Constantinople held one of the strongest strategic positions of the Middle Ages; • how the East survived while the Western Roman Empire crumbled; • how Justinian nearly lost his throne in the Nika Revolt; • Why Hagia Sophia and Justinian's legal code had an impact for centuries; How Roman armies reconquered North Africa and large parts of Italy; Why plague and wars weakened Justinian's restoration; How Heraclius defeated Persia and immediately afterward faced the Muslim conquests; How Greek fire and the walls bought the empire time; What the Iconoclasm was really about; How Byzantine Christianity influenced the Slavic and Rus' worlds; Why Manzikert didn't destroy Byzantium in a single day; How the Crusades were both a blessing and a curse; Why the Fourth Crusade became a catastrophe; How Constantinople was recaptured; Why the empire never regained its former strength; How Mehmed II finally conquered Constantinople. 🔎 THE KEY INSIGHT Byzantium's most important resource wasn't territory. It was time. Walls, diplomacy, taxes, trade, religion, and Constantinople's location repeatedly transformed military weakness into time for reorganization. 💬 YOUR CHOICE What was more important?
