I really appreciate it when a childrens' film isn't afraid to tackle mature topics. The Filmmakers were apprehensive about Hiccup losing a leg after his fight with the dragon, but the test audiences convinced them to keep it. They cited that it wasn't only a realistic consequence, but drew more parallels to Toothless, since they're the same now.

Lilo & Stitch and HTTYD not only share the same directors, but each one has a joke involving stealing what's worn on your left foot. In the former, Jumba tells Pleakley that one of the atrocities Stitch will commit is "stealing people's left shoe." In the latter, Gobber tells Stoick, "Trolls exist! They steal your socks, but only the left ones. What's with that?"

Reminds me of Miyazaki’s mentality about flying sequences. He said people usually always try to animate a plane flying around like you’re swishing a toy around in your hand; he always animated the world the thing is flying through moving around the craft. That way it makes the craft and the audience feel like it’s/they’re on a real flight.

Iirc, it was explained to me that the dragon don't find the island so much as the dragons can locate each other. The smaller dragons bring the huge one food because if they didn't it would basically hunt all the other dragons for food because if the huge dragon had to search for it's own food, it would never find enough to sustain itself and the dragons would be easier to hunt. So basically the smaller dragons bring it food to save their own lives, so they are basically compelled to do it.<br>I don't know if that is matter of factly the case, it was just explained to me that way.

This movie would never have been as popular if it hadn't handled the father-son dynamic so well. The characters act believably and maturely for their situations, and ground the movie in a small-stakes, emotional way. It's phenomenal.

<b>"This is Berk. It's twelve days North of hopeless, and a few degrees South of freezing to death. It's located solidly on the Meridian of Misery. My village. In a word, sturdy. It's been here for seven generations, but every single building is new. We have fishing, hunting, and a charming view of the sunsets. The only problems are the pests. You see most places have mice, or mosquitoes, we have... dragons."</b><br><br>"Hiccup"

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aiPLMbPDow&t=1190">19:50</a> When I first saw this movie, I changed my mind from “This is a good movie” to “This is one of the best!” immediately at the moment when we see Hiccup and Toothless walking together with their prosthetics

You have no idea how happy I am that you pointed out Stoic's look as he walks away. I've said many times that I feel Stoic is one of the best, realistic portrayals of a father in cinema. You can see from that look alone that that choice of "You're not my son" DESTROYS him. He is forced to choose between what is left of his family, who has (in his eyes) sided with an enemy who destroyed that family and keeps it in constant peril, or give up his only son and the last remnant of the love of his life to finally put an end to what destroyed it. But, instead of just leaving it at "you're not my son", as most movies did in the past, they linger as he walks off and you see the raw emotion of his choice hit him. Thanks, Doug. I was hoping you caught that.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aiPLMbPDow&t=1197">19:57</a> You should've mentioned the next scene where Toothless is walking, helping Hiccup to the door. Showing they're both the same having lost a part of themselves and having to adjust. A powerful wordless scene.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aiPLMbPDow&t=629">10:29</a> it’s a well known secret but Toothless’ hesitation was actually an animation error. But it added so much to the scene they kept it in

Fun Fact: The hesitation Toothless shows during the famous "touch" scene was actually an animation error. However, it looked so perfect that the animators chose to leave it in the film
