It’s hilarious that a business man can recognize stock going up in a company but not in a creator. Simply put he wasn’t the same George Lucas that made American Graffiti and a surprise hit Star Wars. This was the PHENOMENON George Lucas who was coming off of Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Good on George for recognizing his worth early on.

Knew someone very well years ago who did landscaping for one of Diller’s homes. This was someone who’d done work for various celebs and big shots on the west side of L.A., so he was no stranger to arrogant and obnoxious behavior when dealing with such folks. He said Diller was in a class of his own. Truly horrific to deal with.

Absolutely everyone in entertainment renegotiates their contract when their "stock" goes up. It's considered polite business for a company to LET them do so, without complaint. George Lucas faced the same thing with Harrison Ford himself. Because we do not have slavery in this country, no one HAS to show up for work. No contract can force them to do so. They can always walk away from whatever their current deal is, and ask for a better deal in exchange for returning. And the company always has the option to say no, and not make whatever project they intended to make with them.

Total bullshit. From Howard Kazanjian, A Producer's Life:<br>"Kazanjian met with Paramount executives on September 11 and 21, 1979, with Lucasfilm’s legal rep Tom Pollock attending at least one of the meetings. Despite negative industry buzz on 1941, Spielberg was still in play. Paramount president Michael Eisner “wanted to do it,” according to Kazanjian, and convinced Paramount chairman Barry Diller that it was a good idea."<br><br>So it was Eisner convincing Diller, not the other way around. <br><br>The deal to make Raiders of the Lost Ark revolved around turning in the film on time an on budget. If it was late or over budget, Lucas had to pay a huge fee to Paramount. Paramount also got first dollar from ticket sales until production costs were paid off, then the proceeds would be split. Lucasfilm only got the lion's share if the box office was much higher. Since the sequel was almost guaranteed to be a hit, it's obvious Lucas didn't see the need for a penalty clause or to split the ticket sales in such a lopsided manner. <br><br>Barry Diller is a putz.

Studio execs only see everything from their own p.o.v. and spend long hours in convo attempting to justify that.
