Get a couple of inexpensive spray bottles. When you are depending on your stored water you can fill them with water and spritz your hands, body, dishes, etc and it conserves use.

How about a guide that teaches people the importance of the difference between water purification and filtration & how to do both? THAT woukd be extremely helpful!

Stock up on baby wipes... these can be used to wash the body, reducing number of showers.

If you use plastic jugs and store them in a garage, don't set the bottles on concrete slab. Over time it will dissolve the bottom of your jugs.

This was an emergency situation my small town suffered in January 2024. Some people didn’t have running water for as long as 5 days. And because of the winter conditions, they weren’t able to get water, and people weren’t able to get to them. Even if they could get to town safely, the stores were all out of drinking water. It got pretty bad for some families and the elderly. Just when you think it can’t happen to you… it does, and did!

How long is long? I did some non-scientific testing (taste and smell) and found with my system 2 years was optimal and 5 years was still fine. My storage is 5 gal collapsible jugs placed in 5 gallon food-grade buckets stored in a dark place both climate controlled and not. Temps ranged from 20F to 120F including freezing solid. The purpose of the buckets is to contain any spills and to support the soft plastic storage jugs. I used good 'city' water ran through a 99.95% of everything filter, and I added 10 drops of bleach to each jug leaving it open for a half hour before storage. 25 gallons were stored this way, 15 inside and 10 in a storage building. One of the indoor jugs- my oldest one- developed a small split at a seam but the bucket contained it and with a lid on that nothing was lost. About each year I tested each one; the slightest chlorine smell and taste and no ill effects from drinking it. I've experienced worse in several cities especially in Florida but also Houston and Atlanta. If you let the water 'air out' for a half hour before drinking the slight chlorine smell and taste will be gone.

Cheap, durable, easily portable, and safe this is the best way for most people IMHO. The most expensive part is the water filter which you should probably have and be using already anyway as 'city' water and 'well' water both can have nasty stuff in it. On quantity I currently live in a camper and have to bring all my water in. No laundry, sink baths daily with shampooing my hair about once a week, and a composting (waterless) toilet. I'm frugal with my water use and I use about 2 gallons a day. Probably half of that is for cleaning me, the dishes, and the camper. If you use a standard toilet (1,6 gallons per flush) better figure on 4-5 gallons a day per person. You don't realize how much water you use until you have to live like I do, so over-do your water storage; it's cheap enough.

An Army Logistics study suggests planning for 7 gallons per person per day in humid or arid places. That includes water for drinking, cooking, hygiene and maintenance. It's drastically more than the FEMA guidelines, but I figured more is better. Remember your hundred pound dog is half the size of a 200 pound soldier, so add 3 and a half gallons for him. And your 10 chickens need a gallon or so. Your 2000 pound horse, 70 gallons. It's more than you think.

Rotate older but unexpired foods to Local Food Banks. If you’re not going to eat it all in time, help someone in need with it.

Always remember.....Never store water in milk jugs, they will breakdown within a few weeks and leak ....Always make sure that you only use containers that has a number 5 or higher in the little recycling triangle symbol on the bottom. And never store containers on concrete.
