3 Jahre kein Handy, kein Auto, kein Zuhause - Warum er fürs Handwerk verzichtet

Saying goodbye to home, traveling through Germany and the world, and experiencing adventures along the way: After completing their apprenticeships, tradespeople can embark on a journeyman's tour. This is called the "Walz" and is a centuries-old tradition in the trades. It used to be an integral part of the apprenticeship; today, tailors, roofers, bricklayers, and others travel voluntarily. During this time, the journeymen must adhere to a multitude of different rules. For example, they are not allowed to use a cell phone or spend money on accommodation. You can see exactly which rules they have to follow in our report. We met carpenter Olli, who has been on his journeyman's tour for a year, in Soest. There, he works on the farm of Thomas, who has regularly hosted journeymen for years. Both are members of the Rolandschacht, a journeymen's association that has existed since 1891 and keeps the tradition of the journeyman's tour alive. There are many different guilds in Germany and Europe, and since the 1970s, some have also accepted women. The guilds organize regular meetings between traveling and local journeymen, establish rules for the journeyman's travels, and provide support during the journey. The experiences and customs are passed down from generation to generation. The journeyman's travels have even been recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. Despite their cultural significance, less than one percent of all new journeymen in Germany are on their travels. In 2025, 80,748 journeymen passed their exams in Germany, and experts estimate that approximately 500 to 600 are on their travels each year. Of these, about 10 percent are women. _________________________________ CHAPTER MARKER 00:00 – 01:00: Olli wants to go to the North Sea – will he manage to hitchhike there? 01:00 – 02:31: Drill failure – can master craftsman Thomas help Olli? 02:31 – 03:50: Three years on the road without a home – what was the craziest place to sleep? 03:50 – 04:37: Traveling without a cell phone – how does Olli manage without Google Maps? 04:37 - 06:07: Strict rules on the journeyman's travels – Olli won't even make an exception for THIS 06:07 – 06:58: These are the memories journeymen leave behind when they visit Thomas 06:58 – 08:27: A new place becomes home – Olli was welcomed so warmly 08:27 – 09:32: The meaning behind the journeyman's attire 09:32 - 10:46: Why Olli embraces the rules of the journeyman's travels 10:46 – 11:49: A unique language among journeymen – this is how they recognize each other 11:49 – 12:58: So little with him – what's in Olli's luggage? 12:58 – 15:21: Olli moves on – how difficult is the farewell for him? 15:21 – 16:44: Olli continues hitchhiking – how far will he get? _________________________________ SOURCES AND MORE INFORMATION Central Association of German Crafts: Economic Importance of Crafts 2025: https://www.zdh.de/daten-und-fakten/k...
