The paper never measured what rough boxes cost, and the only price it gives is the plastic traps. If you've built or bought rough boxes, or you're thinking about it, what would you need to see before you'd switch some of your colonies: more propolis, fewer diseases, or no loss of honey? I read every reply, and it helps me decide which paper to check next.

I had one colony that coated the entire OUTSIDE of the boxes as well. They sealed all the wood grain. I helped that the wood was "dipped" in beeswax. (I hand brushed hot wax with a heat gun to soak the wax in)

Bees are constantly changing their priorities. We cannot expect a colony to follow exactly the same cycle every year, because the conditions, pressures and internal state of the colony are never exactly the same.
This is something I have discussed in my APR concept – Adaptive Priority Redistribution. The basic idea is that a honey bee colony continuously redistributes its workforce, resources and behavioral priorities according to its current needs. Brood rearing, hygiene, foraging, thermoregulation, defense and other tasks do not always have the same priority.
Therefore, when we observe a particular behavior in one season but not in another, it does not necessarily mean that the genetic potential has disappeared. The colony may simply be expressing a different set of priorities under different conditions.
This is why I believe we should study the colony as a dynamic system rather than expect a fixed annual cycle. Genetics provides potential, but the state of the colony determines when, where and how strongly that potential is expressed.

My bees are very sticky lol. They make a lot of propolis. One strain died out eventually though. They would make propolis columns from top box to bottom board. It was a weird semi-fluid gunk.

Is propolis biologically active? How long does its beneficial effects last? Should propolis be removed so honeybees have the option of refreshing the propolis envelope?
