The past couple years after retiring as a material science engineer, I decided to start doing some of my own string measurements putting together some apparatus to measure things like string bed deflection distance as a function of incoming ball velocity, string deformation force at various string tensions and string to string friction (done by pulling a weighted string at a right angle to a tensioned string and measuring the pull force).   I have done tests on about 23 strings (all 17 gauge) that I was interested in looking at.     For me it is intuitive that I want a textured string in the mains for string to ball friction and a round cross to provide a consistently smooth base for the textured string to slide.   With a stiffer round in the cross, I find the  textured main wears into a smooth crescent moon shape and the cross has virtually no wear.    I find the snap back lasts for several weeks (I restring when I pull on the mains and they don't reasonably snap back).    Since it's not practical to test the many combinations of textured and round strings, I did the friction measurements to narrow down what I want to test in my racquet.     What I found is that I should be able to interchangeably use a round string such as Kirschbaum Evolution, Kirschbaum MaxPower, Technifibre RazorSoft, Solinco HyperG Round, Yonex PolyTour Force in the cross combined with a textured main such as Technifibre 4S, Solinco Mach10, Solinco Hyper-G, Solinco Tourbite Soft and expect to get similar sliding of the strings.   I did a test of 3 racquets recently using Mach10 in the main and Evolution/MaxPower/RazorSoft in the crosses and they all were similar in performance for me.    Using Evolution in the cross, I tested using TourBite/Mach10 in the mains and again they perform similar for me.     Now on a side note I use my deformation measurements to determine what tension to string at to account for strings various stiffnesses.    To get the same deformation (which I set at 13.5mm based on the stringed deflection tests) I get on a 16 gauge VS Touch natural gut main strung at 55lbs, I string at the following main tensions for these other 17 gauge strings:  Mach10-51lbs, Tourbite Soft-50lbs, HyperG-50lbs, Confidential-49lbs, RazorSoft-48lbs, MaxPower-47lbs, 4G-46lbs.   (you can note that the stiffer strings require a lower tension to get the same string deformation for a given applied force).   With these tensions, I am expecting to get the same deformation of the string during impact as I would if I had strung with natural gut.    I find the poly's work fine for me at the lower tensions with good pocketing and feel.  (for reference I play with a Wilson Ultra Pro 16by19 V4 97).

Hi Luca, user of Mach 10, Con Soft, BD Mach here. As usual your comments on all these strings are spot on. Wish you also carry Restring strings and have a comparison on Sync (vs HGR) Zero (vs M10), SLAP (vs CONS), and how the hybrids perform (consistently)!

+1 for hybrid setups with shaped mains and round crosses. I use O-Toro and Snap on one of my Aeros and Mach-10 and Wasabi X on the other. Both hybrids are confortable and with good spin. I plan to try next Confidential Soft with Enso Pro or another soft round string in crosses.

Thank You for this video. It seems to me, that, according what You describe, shaped strings could be suited for me as table tennis player with table tennis technique.

    Great review

Good job. Agree with everything - but really could have started the video with don’t use any of these strings in a full bed. Funnily enough my next test will be your hyper g round hybrid. But I’ve been using all these strings at 1.20 / 1.25 paired with restring sync 1.20 for years. Pretty much removes all the negatives from all the full beds - better durability, consistency, more spin, more touch and feel. Cheat code

I am playing with confidential soft on the mains and polytour on the crosses and it plays great on my ezone98/2025

I loved round strings full bed and still miss the feel nowadays. But since I switched to shaped mains and round crosses my game stepped up big time.<br><br>Another cheat code on this setup is stringing 2 lbs lower on the cross. Not sure if you tried, Id definitively recommend.<br><br>Btw my setup is otoro tour x wasabi x.

Honestly, tour bite comes in 20g, and it really benefits from it! Still super controlled, but is really comfortable at that gauge. The only downside in my eyes of really thin strings is that they tear up your balls.
