  The kiwi accent is rare enough in film that it often breaks immersion when I do hear it unexpectedly. I recall a few years ago watching one of the Star Wars films and out of nowhere a perfectly Māori accented English broke through from Temuera Morrison as Jango Fett and I just about spat out my drink because my brain could not figure out how the Star Wars and Māori universes crossed over

  I think the variety of Kiwi accents gets overlooked a lot. For example, you and I don’t sound alike, though I suspect to most Americans we’d sound identical. It’s the same with Australian accents. They get treated as a solid mass, rather than distinct. I’ve met Australians who have been indistinguishable from Kiwis, but most are really distinct from most of us. There’s so much nuance, and variability.

  I thought Kiera’s accent wasn’t bad. She was crying, snotting, and kiwi accenting at the same time. Quite difficult 😃

  In defense of Steve Gutenberg - the character in Don&apos;t Tell Her it&apos;s Me is an AMERICAN cancer survivor trying to romance Jamie Gurtz, but blew his first shot because he was still recovering and looked like hell. So his romance novelist sister convinces him to adopt a &quot;Mysterious Stranger&quot; persona to get a second shot, and she crafts this &quot;Lobo&quot; character. She gets him to try out some accents to ramp up the exoticism, and Gutenberg&apos;s character is so bad at accents that the sister picks Kiwi because &quot;no one has ever heard it&quot; and won&apos;t be able to tell how terrible it is. <br>The joke is that the accent is SO bad that even with the (at the time) obscurity of the accent to American ears, it STILL sounds bad and fake. &nbsp;(The movie dates back to 1990, before Peter Jackson revealed ya&apos;lls existence to us over here in the States)

  We speak really monotone - we dont have an upward inflection at the end of sentences like Aussies. We really blunt out vowels whereas australians drag theirs out.<br>Our news anchors used to have the british accent because it was considered upper-class

  Joe Thomas (UK) is in Paul Williams (taskmaster NZ) show &quot;New Zealand Spy.&quot; He also can&apos;t do a kiwi accent. The show absolutely nailed that NZ deadpan awkward humour.

  With almost no exceptions, they always end up sounding Australian but with a little bit of south african mixed in. They can never quite get it right. Kiwis can always tell if the accent is off.
