  What I like about this gentleman is he is a true historian not a journalist. He tries to put his historical context on historical things that are still impacting us today. &nbsp;Reminding students that to understand history you have to apply the historical lens as best you can, not view it from today’s perspective and with perfect hindsight. He seems like a true teacher.

  One of Isabel Wilkerson’s most compelling arguments is that Germany doesn’t honor Nazis with public monuments, while the U.S. spent generations honoring Confederate leaders. That contrast reveals just how deeply white supremacy was normalized here. Rather than simply erasing Confederate statues, I think there’s value in recontextualizing them—painting them, inverting them, or transforming them through art, much like Kara Walker and other artists have done. The goal isn’t to celebrate them; it’s to confront what they represent. We shouldn’t forget how normalized racism was—or how its legacy continues today. History is something we have to reckon with, not pretend never happened.
