It is disheartening to see how poorly researched some of the information is. To clarify, Nazia Hassan's father’s name was Syed Baseer ud Din Hassan, not Basir Hassan. And when exactly did Nazia’s mother supposedly go to a music teacher? Like, seriously? Nazia’s mother never attended Sohail Rana’s program—Nazia herself participated in it because the producer, Shireen Khan, was a close friend of her mother. Additionally, Nazia sang Dosti Asa Nata.
The entire story about Nazia meeting Zeenat Aman is pure fantasy. Nasir Adeeb Sahib should have taken the time to read Zeenat Aman’s interview, where she genuinely explained how she met Nazia. Nazia’s father was convinced by her mother to allow her to sing just one song.
There was no call from Bombay regarding Aap Jaisa Koi. Feroz Khan was in London for a shoot, and he handed the project to Biddu, who then selected Nazia Hassan. This is clearly mentioned in Biddu’s biography. Aap Jaisa Koi was recorded in London—on 24 tracks, making it the first time such a recording technique was used for a song. Nazia never traveled to India for the recording. Also, for the record, the song was Aap Jaisa Koi Meri Zindagi Mein Aaye, not Koi Meri Zindagi .
Another misconception—Biddu was not some unknown “boy.” He was already an established and famous music producer who had worked with artists like Carl Douglas, Jimmy James, and Tina Charles. In fact, he is among the world’s top 50 music producers.
Now, let’s talk about the Made in India album. It was originally created for Nazia Hassan, but she had already retired from music by that time. More importantly, being Pakistani, she was not comfortable singing the words Made in India, which is why she declined the offer. The entire album was produced for her by Biddu in 1995.
Yes, Nazia Hassan never celebrated her birthday—she preferred donating to charity instead, and her family continues this tradition. However, for the record, Nazia’s father passed away in 2021, and her mother is unwell. Zoheb Hassan has taken on the responsibility of continuing her good work.
It is completely false to claim that Nazia Hassan’s last name was not Hassan. Her father’s full name was Syed Baseer ud Din Hassan, and she always used her last name as Hassan.
Nazia and Zoheb Hassan sang in numerous Bollywood films, including Star, Ilzaam, and Main Balwan. Boom Boom and Ooee Ooee were blockbuster hits from Star, while Main Aaya Tere Liye was Govinda’s introduction to Bollywood. Their song Hulla Gulla Karien Hum with Kishore Kumar was a major hit from Main Balwan.
As for their so-called "ban" on PTV, this is another misrepresentation. They were never banned—especially after Music 89. There was only a brief period during Zia-ul-Haq’s rule when they were asked not to perform together. However, it was Zia himself who later invited both to the President House. It was nothing more than a political move to appease certain clerics.
Lastly, the claim that Zoheb Hassan ever gave an interview speaking about Nazia is completely untrue. And the idea that Nazia was told she couldn’t have children? That is both inaccurate and irrelevant. Nazia Hassan was full of life until the very end, and she never displayed disappointment, even in her final moments.
While it is heartening to see her being remembered, it is crucial that facts are not distorted, as altering history does a great disservice to her legacy.
