I MOVED TO THE PHILIPPINES TO START OVER… SO WHY DO I WANT TO LEAVE? 🇵🇭 This honest Philippines Walk & Talk is about burnout, retirement, moving abroad, starting over, expat life, and the uncomfortable reality that sometimes your problems follow you. I moved to the Philippines in June 2024 because I wanted a different life. And in many ways, I got exactly what I wanted. I have a beautiful Filipina wife, a baby boy, freedom, a simpler lifestyle, and the ability to live life on my own terms. *So why am I burned out?* That's the question I'm trying to figure out. This isn't retirement advice. It's not dating advice. I'm not telling you to move to the Philippines, stay in America, get divorced, get married or do anything else. *I'm not a guru.* I'm simply telling you what happened to me. If you're a guy thinking about retiring in the Philippines, moving abroad, leaving America, starting over after a divorce, or looking for a simpler life, you may want to hear this. Because I've learned something uncomfortable: *You come with you.* If you're a procrastinator, that comes with you. If you have bad habits, those can come with you. If you're bad with money, moving somewhere cheaper doesn't automatically make you better with money. If you're terrible with women, moving to the Philippines doesn't magically turn you into Don Juan. And if you're overweight, there wasn't a gym on the airplane. 😂 A new country can change your surroundings. It can give you freedom, new experiences, new people and an entirely different lifestyle. But it doesn't automatically change *you.* That's true in the Philippines. It's true in America. It's true in Mexico, Thailand, Canada or anywhere else you decide to start over. And I'm not saying you shouldn't go. Sometimes you absolutely need to leave. Sometimes changing your environment is exactly what you need. Sometimes retirement really is everything you hoped it would be. Sometimes divorce really does give you the opportunity to rebuild your life. Sometimes moving overseas changes everything. I know that because *moving to the Philippines changed my life.* But changing your circumstances and changing yourself are two different things. If you're sitting in America counting down the days until retirement and dreaming about the Philippines, I understand you. I've been there. You're watching videos about Angeles City, Cebu, Dumaguete, Baguio, Iloilo and Siargao. You're looking at apartments. You're calculating your retirement income. You're imagining the freedom. And maybe it really will be fantastic. But there's another question worth asking: *What are you retiring TO?* Not what are you retiring from. What are you retiring *to?* And if you're divorced and thinking about coming here to start over, I understand that too. Maybe you'll meet an amazing Filipina? Maybe you'll build an incredible new life. I hope you do. But don't expect another person to fix everything inside you. A new country won't automatically make you happy. A new relationship won't automatically make you happy. And a new address won't automatically make you a new person.
