Tenor playing at its finest. I could listen to this all night long. Love the Prez quotes from 1:40 to 2:00.

People consider Monk the "High Priest of Bop"-- I consider Dex the High Priest of Bop Tenor-- he was there at the very start-- in the 1st bop combo on 52nd Street (Onyx Club, 1944) with Dizzy and Max. Studio sessions in '45 that put him on the map-- Great solos with Mr. B's bop band in '45-46. And he kept the flame of bop thru his long career.. highly respected, unbelievable tone, technique and imagination (quotes tunes like a crazy man).. And what a cool onstage persona! I love Dex!

Dexter on fire! Dexter Is a fascinating study in contrasts. His lines vary from very simple gritty, repetitive figures to the leanest, sleekest most direct and powerful 8th note lines you’ll ever hear - even to this day. The latter would be enough to fill the vocabulary of a bop/post bop guitarist or pianist, while the former could inform an entire R&B tenor approach. He is unsurpassed. While I love Trane and everything he inspired, young players would do well to return to the 8th note constructions of Gordon. Without these there would not have been the Coltrane we know today.<br>Joseph P Cannavo
