  With bards historically being the people who could keep track of lineage in some ancient cultures, it has occurred to me that a bard using a "your mom" joke as a vicious mockery would probably be historically accurate

  A high-level party is boasting about their combat prowess:<br><br>The fighter says &quot;I can kill a man in one round.&quot;<br>The rogue says &quot;I can kill a man before the first round even starts.&quot;<br>The wizard says &quot;I can kill an entire army in one round.&quot;<br>The cleric says &quot;I can kill a <b>balor</b> in one round.&quot;<br>The bard says &quot;I can convince four powerful idiots to kill for me!&quot;<br><br>EDIT: &nbsp;Why are people dunking on 5E Rangers specifically in replies to this comment that has nothing to do with rangers and applies (to varying degree) in all editions?

  Gonna throw my two cents in. Me and my playgroup call characters that specialize in buffs/debuffs/field-control &quot;Tacticians&quot;. It ended up being popular enough in our little local gaming community that it ended up becoming a class catagory for a ttrpg im working on, so figured it might be good enough to share.

  College of Lore is the original bard and most reminiscent of historical/legendary bards recording and spreading histories and stories. Though as poetry

  To be honest, I remember I once played a &apos;Lawyer Bard.&apos; I kinda played a bit funny but also very serious and stoic, like, literally saying, &quot;I am sorry to tell you this, but as a warlock, you are legally required to get naked right now&quot; with a serious voice. And to be honest, I think there are many types of things you can play with the concept of a bard, like, besides an artist, you have the tools to play a spy, a noble, a surfer, a puppeteer, a barkeeper, a pirate, and even a shapeshifter monster if you want to.

  &quot;You dont have to sing&quot; Reminds me of my brother&apos;s bard. Played them like a warrior-poet. Slice down enemies, help the weak, utter a haiku about how how he&apos;s angry and you should run (*cough* Teshin type stoicism *cough*) It was a pretty nice one

  I just finished reading the Hobbit again yesterday and the value put on songs, riddles, and wordplay in that book really contextualized where the fantasy of the bard comes from. Honestly it gave me a new appreciation for the Bard
