Thank you to Professor Ward for this intellectually titillating talk, and to the CS Lewis conference and George Fox University for making it available to those poor souls who could not make the stars align so as to attend in person.

I was going to send this to my former college contemporary who's a leading expert on C.S. Lewis and then I realised it IS him. Well done Dr Ward.

I was in New Zealand a number of years ago. I found myself in the countryside at a lookout at the top of a hill. The view of the fields and river below was beatuful. Reflecting now, the reason it appeared so beautiful was becuse there ws so much empty space that my eyes took interest on the scenery. I also visited an art museum in Paris.<br>Looking at a particularly beautiful painting by Van Gogh i reflect now that i didntbstand so close to it as to reduce the empty space, but i stood in a place where there was more empty space so that i could apreciate the whole painting in a single glance. It may be that in the seeming emptiness of outerspace the purpose of the space is to highlight the beauty of the various arrangements of stars contained in the cosmos.<br>Interesting thought.

This is why I've never liked C.S.Lewis. He wrote for children. In contrast, J.R.R. Tolkien started out writing for children ("In a hole in the earth there lived a hobbit") but soon graduated to writing for adults.
