Hi Mark. I'm not sure how avocado trees are sold commercially in Australia, but here in the U.S. trees are sold in pots filled with potting soil. Potting soil is not a good growing medium for many trees, especially avocados. Avocados have very sensitive roots and do not want organic matter around their roots. I plant all my avocados in pots filled with sand, pumice, decomposed granite and a little peat moss to hold some moisture. I make my soil this way because the roots require oxygen and potting is organic matter that takes all the oxygen away from the roots. I have heavy clay soil as well. So, when I plant in the ground, I plant above the ground in a raise bed filled with the soil i make with sand as I explained earlier. I wash/rub off all the potted soil the trees come with from the store first, then I plant in pots or ground. So, far my trees have been growing beautifully and the trees i leave in potting soil are suffering. I got a lot of this info from YouTube channel, Gary's Best Gardening. He goes into great detail in growing avocados. I've been very successful following his advice. Check it out of you're interested. Hope this helps. Take care!

Great video! I am in Thailand where fungal root diseases are in almost every soil and good potting soils are minority. We ran through the exact experience you have had and tried avocado for 12 years with precisely the same results. We also have a very extreme harsh climate with frequent droughts, insane heat waves and floods. Thai termites and bugs are also loving avocado trees which is why practically all open outdoor avocado plantations use lots of fungicides and pesticides. Research at the scope required to selectively breed fungus resistant varieties is beyond the capabilities of our small operation with the main factor being access to saplings from South America with original genetic diversity as well as tough import restrictions. We have however managed to get out banana varieties resistant against Panama disease using original wild Thai varieties which propagate by seed. The later was serendipity more than actual research.

I have 5 avocado trees in my backyard, in different spots originally but moved to better spots once i learned the trick. Main thing that I learned that have made my avocados thrive, they hate wind and afternoon sun. I struggled to keep avocados alive until I planted them next to a fence that blocks wind and afternoon sun. Now have 5 trees (reed, fuerte, carmen, gem, and hass) thriving along that fence.

When i was a kid in Los Angeles 70 years ago, we had two big old avocado trees in the yard. I used to climb one and pick the avocados. The soil was dry, with a rock-like layer of hardpan about a foot under the surface. The area had been garbanzo bean fields before houses came in. Anyway, the trees got zero care, watered only by rain, and produced for years. Likely they were some hardy old heirloom variety. 🎉 Wish i had one of those now !

Phytopthora is so easy to remember for a native Greek speaker. It basically translates to "Plant demise/decay/wearing out" .

Here's what I discovered about growing avocado trees in Southern California. They hate an offshore breeze. I had several failures until I notice that the healthy trees were planted fairly close to houses that blocked the wind. Once I protected the trees from the wind, they grew fine.

I grew up in the 80s and 90s south of Brisbane. I loved avocados and would plant all the seeds of the avocados I ate in the garden. Nearly all of them grew and my father got sick of transplanting them around the yard, and stopped me from planting more. At one point we had probably 10 avocado trees, all large and healthy, all grown from seed producing heaps of large beautiful fruit, every year. Not sure what I did right but, we never had an issue.

I live in the Florida keys and I grew 3 avocado trees in my yard for about 8 years and a hurricane flooded us out with salt water and killed them all off.

That makes sense. I’ve been failing with growing avocados for 4 years now. Same sad drying out.
