If the lyrics and the melody are right, they serve each other. That's what makes a perfect song. It's like a miracle.

Writing lyrics first has always worked for me...it is sometimes difficult to find the right chords to put them to, but it's inherently easier (for me) to write my thoughts/feelings, etc then figure out the chords/melody 👊🏾🎹🎸🎤🤎

Check that scene in Get Back of PM mumbling over his developing guitar vibe.

Many times I will be practicing scales, and a riff comes to me as the motif.

Love this video!! This is EXACTLY the process to write & record a song that i do !! I cannot see how anyone can write the words first - that seems very alien.

I didn't used to, but now I do write lyrics first! (usually) It really depends how confident you are with words. I took a break from music to spend years concentrating on writing, so I came back to music very confident of my writing. Having the words first can be a huge advantage: good lyrics suggest melody, rhythm and structure so that the song almost writes itself. But the lyrics must be really good. Generic cliches and clumsy rhythm will kill the song dead.
