There was a vertical lathe like this where I served my apprenticeship in North London as a toolmaker back in the 1960's; lovely 'piece of kit', so handy for heavy pieces.

I grew up in my dad's machine shop. He had the same kind of old, simple machines as shown in this video. He bought his machines very cheap and used them for over 40 years. He made a lot of money with those machines. They are very basic, nothing fancy, no computerized components, yet can be used to fabricate precision-made pieces. It's all in the skill of the machinist. These gentlemen are very skilled and talented!

Once upon a time Bombay was a major industrial base from where heavy goods used to be manufactured and even exported all over the developed countries.

operated the exact same machine at evens Deakin Brisbane as 4th year apprentice they’ve got awesome power but our tooling was slightly better running higher feed and speed rates and same depth of cuts 12 thou per rev was not unusual for roughing cut feed rate giving a 250 finish .. because the tooling was changeable carbides the chips were discontinuous and you’d spend most of the day shovelling giant blue chips into a bin during cuts , sometimes the chips would come off in a continuous steam of discontinuous swarf chip as big as your half the size of your thumb you could put the bin close enough to directly catch them when side cuts and face cuts were in action boring cut chips came under the job and spread the hole circumference of the job .. awesome machine with awesome grunt and great finishes
