Actually, there have been multiple interfaith royal marriages involving Catholics and persons of Protestant/Orthodox backgrounds -- with the latter not always converting to Catholicism. In fact, not even all the children were raised in the faith -- although in most cases they were. As long as the non-Catholic party is willing to promise to bring up prospective children as Catholics, a dispensation is not usually difficult to obtain. Until World War I, the most important thing that mattered in a royal marriage was that both spouses were born to the princely rank: this principle continued to be enforced for decades afterward. Beginning with 1785, right down to the present day, there have been 44 documented cases of marriages involving Catholics and non-Catholics within just the first tier of the ALMANACH DE GOTHA alone.
