I swear Cut my lip is the perfect example of when a fadeout is okay lmao, it has built up to this spacee-like feeling and continuing forever!

Legend is actually meant to be about losing his grandfather to dementia, hence lyrics like "Did not know how to take it, when your eyes did not know me, like I know you." Tyler would probably appreciate that his description of his grandfather made you think of a celebrity though!

'pet cheetah' is a metaphor. A cheetah is the fastest animal in the world, but if it's locked in a room, all that speed is useless. It’s a way to describe writer's block.

Re the lack of guitars, Tyler hadn't yet learned to play guitar at the time Trench was made, he played bass and uke. When you get to Scaled and Icy you will hear guitar as he taught himself to play during the pandemic. (They don't use session musicians).

Legend is actually a tribute to Tyler's grandfather who passed away from Alzheimer's disease.

Notice in the second verse he said “I could give up and boost up my reputation.”

He believes that many artists or celebrities experience massive boosts in popularity after their death, and this sort of pattern in our culture may lead people to celebrate suicide to a degree.

Kids who are depressed may look at suicide as a way out, or even a way of sticking it to the people who hurt them. “Thinking I’ll teach them, well I’m refusing the lesson”

He finally concludes it with “find your grandparents or someone of age. Pay some respects for the path that they paved. To life they were dedicated. Now that should be celebrated”

there is a video titled “I am Clancy” on their youtube channel that has a very good explanation of the story from blurryface up to the start of clancy. they also have a playlist on their channel titled “the story” that has every in world lore music video in order.

Fade outs aren’t inherently bad, especially when done by a group or artist that usually never does them so you can tell they’re done to create a specific feel. Fade outs being bad comes from the idea that people would just throw them on the end of a song because they didn’t know how to end it, but I don’t get that vibe from the one at the end of Cut My Lip at all. That fade out has always sounded really good to me.

Also, there is no such thing as something that would always constitute as lazy songwriting. Each thing you can do in a song is a tool to be used to create a specific sound, or feel, or emotion. If you do something to avoid having to try something else, then that is lazy. But if you think a fade out is the best suited thing for what you’re going for then that cannot by definition be lazy, because you are not using it to avoid any other work.

Tyler tended to learn instruments on the go, e.g. he started playing bass for blurryface. You don't really hear guitars because he learnt the guitar for scaled and icy (the next album), then he picked up the baritone ukulele for Clancy.
