The Truth About Pinocchio: It’s NOT A Kids’ Movie

Everyone knows the puppet whose nose grows when he lies. Almost nobody knows Carlo Collodi originally hanged him from an oak and wrote The End. This is the documented origin of Pinocchio, from the 1883 book The Adventures of Pinocchio to the 1940 film that sanded it smooth. In Collodi's version the talking cricket is killed in chapter four, the puppet burns his own feet off while he sleeps, a court of apes jails the victim instead of the thieves, and the Blue Fairy first appears not as a guardian but as a dead girl at a window, waiting for her coffin. The Land of Toys turns children into donkeys and sells them by the pound. None of this was an accident. It was a schoolbook with a body count. We trace what Collodi actually wrote, why child readers revolted and forced him to resurrect a hero he had already killed, and why Disney kept the wish but cut the consequence. The nose was never the dark part.
