  It's infinitely cheaper to provide free sunscreen than the medical costs associated with skin cancer. Prevention is cheaper then cure.

  The BBQ's are fundamentally there to reduce bushfire risk - as you can't have an open flame on total fire Ban days.

  Taxes in Australia are not "through the roof". If you add health costs to the taxes in the USA, you are paying more tax there than we do in Australia. Yet our taxes pay for health care and education  among other things. Our taxes are returned to the people in many ways, yours pay for the military.

  With a lot of the &quot;weirdly Australian&quot; things, there&apos;s a rational, if unseen, logic to why it&apos;s done.<br>Electric Barbecues means no open flames, therefore bushfire prevention.<br>Free sunscreen means less skin cancer, less expense on public health.<br>Free/inexpensive public transport &nbsp;means &nbsp;less traffic congestion, 1 bus = minimum 20 cars. A tram could be double, a train eight times that.

  In Australia not only are public toilets free but there is an app to find your nearest public toilet. This is valid for the whole country.

  Same in New Zealand. If you rent from a landlord, it’s the landlord that pays the rates(as they own the property), but depends where you live. Some cities renters will pay the water charge, ie Auckland.

  I have had two melanomas. One in my calf and 0ne on my head between my right eye and right ear. Both removed with a lot of stiches.

  My sister had moved to the USA for a few yrs, from Australia.. got married, had a baby, they all came over for a holiday for extended family to meet the baby. My sister left baby w me to take hubby to beach and he thought he was some tough guy who could beat the sun, nothing could hurt him cos he used to be Army! Well, they returned home 2hours later, he hadnt listened..was in the water w no sunscreen..43°c day..and the water of course reflects UV and can make you burn faster. So my sister walked into the house when they got &nbsp;home, had to take GI Joe to hospital to treat 2nd and 3rd degree burns!<br><br>Served him right, the jerk he turned out to be!
