  We just returned from South America and did a 2-day tour through Viator of the Sacred Valley (the Maras salt mines were amazing!) and Machu Picchu, which included the Vista Dome train. We stayed overnight in Aguas Calientes (also known as Machu Picchu Town). I just wanted to point out that we actually were able to take everything on the train with us--our carry-ons and personal items. It wasn't a problem at all. The next morning we left all the luggage at the hotel while we toured Machu Picchu. Also, I wanted to give major props to LIma--it was our favorite city in South America. The best food, the best parks, the best climate (not too hot!) and by far the cleanest. We stayed in Miraflores. It's a good place to spend 4 days before heading to MP and the Sacred Valley.

  We were at Machu Picchu on February 18. It poured rain when we were waiting in line for the bus, but the fog had mostly lifted and it was beautiful up at Machu Picchu.  Absolutely gorgeous!!!

  I just love watching you guys living it up in this once in a lifetime spot. I did this with my spouse before retiring and embarking on slow travel. This is a bucket list—so it costs a bit. &nbsp;But it’s also located in Peru, which is an incredible country that is very affordable. &nbsp;If you can, pay for for this day and then return to what else Peru offers. You won’t regret it.<br><br>And I climbed up there at age 66. The altitude was a challenge. I didn’t let anyone rush me, I did it at my pace and I strongly suggest everyone else do the same.

  We had taken a family trip to Peru in 2004, my husband and 2 daughters. On the way to Machu Picchu we took the train train close to Cusco, arrived in Aguas Calientes and then the bus up the mountain. At the time there were no timed tickets. This trip is simple for anyone to do on your own. Save yourself the extra bucks!!!
