While she has passed, I met my wife on IRC.  We grew up 30 mins apart, but were introduced by a random mutual from half the planet away from us.  IRC will always have a special place in my heart.

My wife ( RIP 2024) and I met on irc in 1996 and married in the 1998. It was a fun time with mIRC and memes and friends.

"The Internet was a place to escape TO, rather to escape FROM" - dang that hit hard. Right on the nails head.

Writing scripts for mIRC is how I learned to code. Because everyone needs to know what mp3 you’re listening to in a rainbow of colors…

Aww I love the polite guideline about waiting 30 seconds for everyone to say good-bye. That's very different from now where we're essentially online all the time, so chats (usually) take on an eternal state. Observing the time can help recognize the relationships being built and make them feel more impactful. Really awesome video!

Excursion mIRC user here… hosted a XDDC server from my bedroom as a 9 year old.. I spoke with people in their 20s and 30s and they saw me as their peer. Showed me their ways of breaching university an corporate systems to leech of their T1 links. Their openness is what drove me to my career in IT a decade later - I remember it fondly and will never forget the experience. The internet is a shell in some ways of what it once was.

Used to run a joke in Norwegian, as a 13 year old on EFnet. Something like "is 4 a odd or even number", but in Norwegian it spells like "er 4 et /oddetall eller et /partall", just waiting for people to leave all the channels they were in when trying to reply with /partall (even number)

I was sitting on IRC (EFnet) in 2001 in Hamburg Germany, and knew about the attacks on the World Trade Center before even the news broadcasted it on TV. Still blows my mind to this day.

My mate and I started a pirate software channel in AusNet (a so-called warez channel) and modified a popular mIRC script by hand to make it more friendly for people to share what they had downloaded.<br><br>After it got popular among the nerds at our highschool, it spread to all the high schools in Canberra. Then the rest of the country. Then the cops visited us separately at home one evening and spooked the shit out of our parents which made us stop. It was funny listening to the cops try and describe the wrongdoing to my mum and dad, they all had no idea what IRC was, and barely knew what the Internet was.<br><br>A different time.
