What’s your opinion on family estrangement?

People see the moment you walked away. They rarely see the thousand moments that made you realize you had to.

One of the hardest truths people refuse to accept is that some people do not cut off their families because they are selfish. They do it because every conversation hurts, every gathering reopens old wounds, and every chance they give gets mistaken for permission. Walking away is not always a lack of love. Sometimes it is the last act of self-preservation.

Best decision ever. I'm too old to have toxic people in my life.

Anyone else think family boundaries are one of the hardest things to explain to people who never lived through it?

I forgave but i will not forget. I cut all ties with friends and family. The biggest quicksand in my life. 10 tons were lifted from my chest. I am free now and in peace..... <3

One of the hardest decisions is realizing the people who hurt you the most also share your last name.

We had an abusive mother. When I turned 17, I reported her for child abuse and never looked back. Years later, I don't even know if she is alive or not. I'm cool with that.

What hit me the most is the idea that cutting contact usually doesn’t happen because of one big dramatic moment. A lot of the time, it’s years of small things piling up until your body finally says, “I can’t keep doing this.” I think people judge family estrangement too quickly from the outside because they only see the final silence, not everything that came before it

Most people don’t cut off family because they’re cold, selfish, or angry. They do it after years of feeling unheard, hurt, dismissed, or emotionally exhausted. For many, it’s not about giving up on family. It’s about reaching a point where protecting their peace becomes more important than maintaining a connection that keeps causing pain. And honestly, some of the hardest grief comes from losing people who are still alive.

Sometimes the strongest act of love is walking away from the people who taught you what pain feels like. Family isn't just about blood, it's about safety, respect, and peace. For many, cutting contact isn't revenge or hatred. It's survival after years of being unheard, blamed, controlled, or hurt. Healing often begins where the cycle finally ends.
